Colington home damaged in late night fire, four displaced

The Colington Volunteer Fire Department has reported that at around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024, Colington firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire on Knight Court, outside of Colington Harbour.
County Fire Marshal Steve Kovacs was in the area and saw the flames from several streets away as the dispatch was occurring.  When he arrived at the scene, Kovacs was told there were still three people that had not exited the home. As more resources were dispatched, the fire marshal was able to confirm that everyone had escaped the blaze and no one was injured.
“An occupant in the downstairs portion of the home said their dog alerted them to the fire on the exterior of the home. Flames had extended to the second-floor porch and stairs, making that escape route impossible to use.  That occupant broke an upstairs window to alert the upstairs residents and managed to find a way for them to climb off the deck to safety,” stated information from Colington VFD Fire Chief Glenn Rainey. “While the home did have working smoke alarms, the exterior smoke and flames did not trigger the alarm until later in the incident.”
Crews from Colington, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk and Southern Shores responded to the two-alarm fire.
There was heavy damage to the rear of the home. Four people were displaced; the Red Cross is assisting them.
Minor damage to a neighboring home was also reported.
The fire marshal’s office is investigating the fire. Dare County EMS and sheriff’s deputies also assisted during the incident.
There were no injuries to firefighters or residents.
