Justin White is a contractor, garage remodel/installation expert, and VP of Marketing at Overhead Doors.
Speaking to The U.S. Sun he shared tricks of the trade for keeping homes from looking dated.
DATED DESIGNS
White said homes can look old-fashioned before you step through the door if basic maintenance isn’t being kept up.
“Peeling paint or patchy caulk around windows scream ‘fixer-upper,’” he said.
“But even small refreshes like a fresh coat of paint go such a long way in changing perceptions.”
He said once inside, stained carpets and “worn-out appliances” such as fridges can also be aging.
He recommended upgrading lighting as a “cheap and easy” way to make homes feel more polished.
“Replace basic bulbs with warm-toned LEDs, and add extra lamps and fixtures,” he said.
OLD ORNAMENTS
White recommended decluttering to make a home seem more expensive.
“Clearing out unused knickknacks allows the nicer pieces you do have to shine,” he said.
“Furniture placement is big too – leave walking paths clear and position seating near windows if possible.
Crown molding draws the eye upwards to create the illusion of height.

“Overhead storage like attic stair closets also maximize functionality.”
He said decorating with lighter colors on the upper walls can help to make small rooms feel airy.
“I also love how crown molding draws the eye upwards to create the illusion of height,” he said.
ANTIQUE TREASURES
White said thrift stores and consignments are “your friends,” when shopping for furnishings on a tight budget.
He advised incorporating plants even if they’re fake for a brighter space.
“With an afternoon and some elbow grease, used items get a whole new life at a fraction of retail prices,” he said.
“Accessorizing with things like throws, art, and plants is an affordable way to pull different spaces together into a cohesive look.”
