Fremont Police Chief To Stay On Until Successor Is Appointed

FREMONT, CA — Retiring Fremont Police Department Chief Sean Washington will stay at the helm of the department while city leaders find his replacement, city officials announced this week. Washington will continue on as interim police chief after his Aug. 9 retirement while the city conducts a nationwide search for his successor. "The City is grateful for Chief Washington’s continued commitment to Fremont and his support in ensuring a smooth and seamless transition," read an announcement from City officials. "With this approach, the City anticipates minimal disruption, allowing the Fremont Police Department to continue delivering the high level of service our community expects and deserves."According to City officials, the recruitment process is expected to begin in the upcoming weeks and will take approximately three to four months.Washington, who announced his retirement last month, joined the Fremont Police Department in 1997 and worked as a detective, field training officer, SWAT team member, arrest control instructor, driving instructor, and as a member of the School Resource Officer Unit, according to the Fremont Police Department. After rising through the ranks as sergeant, lieutenant, captain and commander of the Special Operations Division, Washington was appointed as the department's police chief in October of 2021.RELATED: Chief Speaks Out On Violent Crimes: 'Fremont Remains A Safe City'His retirement comes at a challenging time for the city. The summer has seen a series of high-profile violent crimes, including the first two homicides of the year and a smash and grab burglary in which a vehicle slammed through a storefront.Earlier this month, he reached out to residents to offer reassurance.“I am writing to you today following several deeply unfortunate incidents that have impacted our City,” Chief Sean Washington wrote in a message posted on the police department’s social media accounts. “I want to reassure you: Fremont remains a safe city, as it has for many decades.”“Our Police Department is actively investigating these cases,” Washington added. “The homicides — our first two of 2025 — have been solved, and multiple suspects connected to the robbery have been apprehended.”In response to the string of shootings, Washington increased patrols in the areas where the crimes occurred.Patch Staffer Anna Schier contributed to this report.The article Fremont Police Chief To Stay On Until Successor Is Appointed appeared first on Fremont, CA Patch.
