UK weather: Exact time thunderstorms could hit parts of Britain as Met Office warns of hail & flooding
FORECASTERS have warned thunderstorms and hail could hit parts of the UK – with the risk of flooding, too.
Temperatures have dipped in recent days, with the Met Office saying snow would likely fall in the Scottish Highlands yesterday.

And now the forecasters have warned there is a risk of thunderstorms, hail and flooding in the north today.
Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said thunderstorms and hail could hit Scotland around 11am.
She said there was a risk of downpours leading to flooding in the north from 5am tomorrow.
Annie said: “This pesky northwesterly wind will continue to bring in showers to the northwestern areas, particularly northwestern Scotland.
“The islands and Highlands could see a risk of further thunderstorms – and a mix of hail as well.
“There’s also a risk of showers into Northern Ireland, and parts of southern Scotland but elsewhere should stay largely dry through today.
“It’s going to be a slightly warmer day – highs of around 19C in the south, many areas of up to 17C or 18C. So not too bad in sheltered sunshine.
“The rain and showers will likely turn a bit more persistent as we see a band push in from the northwest so we could see some localised flooding issues from that.”
The Met Office said overall today would likely bring sunshine and scattered showers, with rain mostly falling in the north.
Looking to tomorrow, it said: “A band of showery rain across the northwest spreading southeast through the morning, with heavy and thundery showers behind.
“Elsewhere, mainly dry with sunny spells and the odd isolated shower.”
The Met Office this wek predicted when summer will finally hit, after an unsettled start to the warmer season.
Forecasters said there will be some unsettled weather patterns and intermittent downpours until late June.
Next week could bring some blustery showers to those in the north with “changeable” weather patterns expected amid “drier interludes”.
Brits enjoyed warmest & wettest spring
By Emily-Jane Heap
BRITAIN had its warmest spring on record — but the wettest in nearly 40 years, the Met Office says.
Provisional figures suggest the average temperature in May was a balmy 13.1C — beating the previous record from 2008 by a whole degree.
The average spring temperature was 9.37C, topping the previous record of 9.12C in 2017.
But the UK also saw 301.7mm of rain between March and May — almost a third more than usual — making it the wettest springtime since 1986.
A Met Office spokesperson said: “While it may not have felt like it for many, with sunshine in relatively short supply, provisional figures show May was the warmest on record in our series back to 1884.
“This warmth was especially influenced by high overnight temperatures, with the average UK minimum temperature for May 1.2°C higher than the previous record.
“Rainfall was above average for the UK, while some areas in the south saw over a third more rain than average.”
In contrast, Northern Ireland and Scotland were slightly drier than average in the month.
But the forecast suggests southern parts of the UK will experience a “good deal” of dry spells.
Temperatures are likely to take a dip mid-June for most, but by the end of June, meteorologists are predicting them to rise above average.
Hay fever sufferers were also advised to keep an eye on pollen levels this week.
It comes after Brits soaked up the sunshine on Sunday, with temperatures hitting 23C in parts of the south east.
This was in stark contrast to torrential downpours last week which sparked danger to life and flood warnings across the UK.
Heavy rain saw rail services cancelled and delays, as well as travel chaos on the roads.
Met Office's forecast:
Today:Another day of sunshine and scattered showers, with the majority of the showers across northern areas, where one or two may turn heavy with a risk of hail and thunder. Remaining cool in the brisk northwesterly breeze.
Tonight:Dry for most overnight with clear spells, although showers and longer spells of rain continuing in the northwest. Turning chilly under clear spells with a touch of rural grass frost.
Friday:A band of showery rain across the northwest spreading southeast through the morning, with heavy and thundery showers behind. Elsewhere, mainly dry with sunny spells and the odd isolated shower.
Outlook for Saturday to Monday:Staying similar over the next few days with sunshine and blustery showers in the north. Drier across southern parts of the UK, with temperatures here slowing increasing over the weekend.
June 10-19Showers likely to affect mainly north-eastern areas at the start of this period with the chance of a more organised band of cloud and rain from the west. Driest and sunniest conditions in southern areas. A build of pressure will probably bring settled conditions across the country for a few days after this, with dry, sunny conditions prevailing. Toward the following weekend, these dry conditions may start to decline with a greater chance of more unsettled weather developing. Should this happen, wettest conditions are likely to be in the north and west, with driest weather in the south and east. There is still a chance that drier conditions could remain in place more widely. Temperatures likely to be near or slightly below average at first, perhaps slightly above normal later.
June 20-July 4Signals are weak regarding prevailing weather patterns during this period. Typical conditions for the UK are most probable, with a mixture of weather types. All areas can expected to see some spells of drier, sunnier weather but there will also be showers or longer spells of rain at times. Temperatures are most likely to be close to normal or slightly above.
