In June 2023, a spokesperson for the Duchess of York announced that she was diagnosed with breast cancer and had a successful single mastectomy. Fergie kept fans looped on her recovery on social media and advocated for the importance of early cancer detection through screenings. In January, she shared that she was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, following a post-operative analysis of a mole removed during reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy. A source told PEOPLE in March that the Duchess of York was "very relieved" to learn that her skin cancer had not spread. While the Duchess of York's doctors have guided her not to use the phrase "cancer-free" and she continues with regular check-ups, "the outlook is positive," Hello! reported. On what her routine looks like now, Fergie told the outlet, "I have to be checked regularly, and I have to put cream on my face to get out past sun damage, which means big blisters on my face, chest and hands for three weeks. But I'm not doing immunotherapy, taking any drugs or doing chemotherapy, for which I'm very grateful."The author and advocate added that her health scares served as a wake-up call to reframe her priorities in life."It gave me a swift kick in the butt and told me, 'Right, are you going to start living now, at 64, or are you going to keep on not quite living?' You don't have to be what everyone wants you to be: just be yourself," she explained. "One of the only people who saw me properly was the Queen [Elizabeth] and before she died, she said: 'Sarah, being yourself is enough,' " Fergie said of the advice from her late mother-in-law, who died in September 2022.
