House Republicans narrowly passed their budget framework on Thursday, marking a significant political win for Speaker Mike Johnson after a late-night scramble to secure support from GOP holdouts who had refused to back sweeping tax breaks without deeper federal spending cuts.
Flanked by Senate Majority Leader John Thune early Thursday at the Capitol, Johnson declared that President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill"—which calls for up to $1.5 trillion in cuts to government programs and services—was back on track. The speaker had abruptly paused voting late Wednesday as opposition threatened to derail the package.

"I believe we have the votes," said Johnson, R-La. "We'll take the next big step."
Thune, R-S.D., echoed that optimism, attempting to reassure House conservatives that Senate Republicans were equally committed to pursuing aggressive spending reductions. "We certainly are going to do everything we can," he said.
The final 216–214 vote highlighted just how fragile Johnson's grip on his slim Republican majority remains, with only a few votes to spare. Had the budget plan failed—especially as economic uncertainty swirls amid Trump's ongoing trade wars—it would have dealt a serious blow to the party's legislative momentum and raised new doubts about its ability to govern effectively.
After the vote, Trump posted on Truth Social, "Congratulations to the House on the passage of a Bill that sets the stage for one of the Greatest and Most Important Signings in the History of our Country. Among many other things, it will be the Largest Tax and Regulation Cuts ever even contemplated. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
