Trader Joe's Just Gave This Fan-Favorite Condiment a Mexican-Inspired Twist

As somewhat of a self-proclaimed food anthropologist, it’s always interesting to me to see where dishes and cuisines intersect and how you can trace the influence of cultures from one place to another—like gumbo in Louisiana and its very obvious ties to African okra stew. One would not exist without the other. The same can be said for things like hot dogs and pretzels, and even apple pie. 😋😋SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter🍳🍔We are, at our very core, a collection of recipes passed down and transformed. It’s the one thing that actually connects us, and you can see it everywhere. Take chili crisp, for example. The iconic and increasingly popular condiment is most commonly known for its Asian influence, distinct fiery flavor, and satisfying crunch. In some ways, it’s become what ketchup and mustard are to hot dogs, finding its way into everything from prepackaged ramen to Kettle Brand Potato Chips.Related: This Unexpectedly 'Delightful' Trader Joe's Snack Has One Unfortunate FlawBut despite the predominance of a more Asian-inspired chili crunch capturing much of the market today, there are a wealth of other spicy oil-based condiments the world over that deserve our attention, too. Salsa Macha, believed to originate from Veracruz, Mexico, is a similarly spicy condiment made up of a blend of dried peppers, seeds, nuts, and spices—and boy is it trending. Never one to miss out on a trend, Trader Joe’s just dropped their version of the classic Mexican condiment, and @trader_joes_treasure_hunt just spotted it in stores. It’s easy to think about it as a twist on the brand’s fan-favorite Crunchy Chili Onion, but it has a few differences that make it stand out on its own. Made up of olive oil, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, pepitas, dried pequin peppers, garlic powder, and salt, this savory condiment boasts a more nutty flavor profile and crunchier texture. It would be great on tacos, eggs, drizzled on avocado toast, or even mixed into cottage cheese for a savory midday snack. And a 6-ounce jar will only set you back $4.99, about the same price as its similarly spicy counterpart. We’ll take two! You know, for research purposes. While it isn’t clear if chili crisp or salsa macha came first, or even if they’re related in some way, what is clear is that we have way more in common than we thought. Here’s to discovering more about ourselves through food.Related: The 'Phenomenal' Trader Joe's Dessert Fans Are Raving About is My New Favorite Splurge
