Roku fans warned picture quality being ruined by putting device too close to TV – spot to place it for instant result
SIMPLE device placement mistakes might be ruining your TV quality, according to Roku.
If you’ve dropped your device in the wrong place at home, it can affect how TV shows and movies look.
Give yourself the best chance of getting good Wi-Fi signalRoku
That’s because streaming via Roku devices depends on your internet connection.
And if you want the highest 4K and HDR (including Dolby Vision) video, Roku recommends around 25 Mbps download speed or higher.
But putting your Roku device in the wrong place can slow your internet down – potentially forcing streaming apps to degrade video quality.
Roku has revealed a list of changes that you can make to instantly “improve the Wi-Fi” on your Roku streaming gadget.
HOW TO CHECK YOUR WI-FI
First, you’ll want to check if anything is wrong.
You might already be getting fine speeds and need to look elsewhere for improving video quality.
To check your Wi-Fi connection, press Home on your Roku remote and scroll to Settings.
Then choose Network > About to see information about your Wi-Fi connection.
You should see a Signal Strength read-out that reveals how strong the Wi-Fi connection is to your Roku device.
This will either say Poor, Fair, Good, or Excellent.
If you get Poor or Fair then you could probably benefit with making some positioning changes for your Roku device.
You’ll also want to take a look at the internet download speed at the bottom of the page to see how many Mbps (megabits per second) you’re getting.
By pressing the Check Connection button, you can make a quick check to see your wireless signal strength.
What appliances interfere with your WiFi?

Other people’s WiFi routers
BOOST YOUR WI-FI
There are several ways to improve the signal strength to your Roku device.
First, you’ll want to keep your device far away from anything that creates wireless interference.
“Cordless phones, microwave ovens, or other wireless devices near your router can cause wireless interference that may effect the quality of your network connection,” Roku explained.
Make sure your Roku device isn’t tucked away in a cabinet
“Move any such device away from your wireless router.”
You’ll want to get your Roku device as close as possible to the Wi-Fi router – even a short distance can make a difference.
Similarly, make sure there aren’t any major obstructions between the Roku device and router.
“Install both devices where there are fewer objects and walls between them,” Roku said.
If your TV is located between the Roku device and the router, try moving the Roku device to a location where the TV is not blocking the wireless signal
Roku
“If your router or Roku device is inside a cabinet, we recommend taking it out.
“Reducing the number of obstructions will improve the signal strength.”
Getting height on your router and Roku device is good – don’t put either on the floor.
Additionally, consider moving your Roku device away from the TV.
The Roku Channel – what you need to know
Here's the lowdown...
The Roku Channel is a streaming app that’s available on a range of devices.
It offers more than 400 live TV channels.
And it promises over 80,000 movies and TV shows on an on-demand basis.
Roku says that the app is available on:
Roku streaming devices
Compatible Samsung Smart TVs
Compatible AMazon Fire TV devices
TheRokuChannel.com website
Roku mobile apps (iOS and Android)
Roku notes that the app is only available in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It’s also available in Mexico, but only on Roku devices.
“If your TV is located between the Roku device and the router, try moving the Roku device to a location where the TV is not blocking the wireless signal,” Roku advised.
“If you are using a Roku Streaming Stick, try moving it away from your TV by installing the free HDMI extender cable.”
A great place to put it would be high up on a shelf, on the side of your TV closest to the router. This gives it a great chance of getting good signal.
And finally, consider avoiding using other Wi-Fi devices while you’re watching TV.
