Armed only with a dream, local players are invited to the Long Island Nets open tryouts next month in Massapeaqua. If you’re a local baller and think that there’s professional potential in your bag, the Long Island Nets want you in Massagequa on September 15 for their annual local player tryouts.
The announcement came in a tweet and a press release Friday…

The Nets have asked those trying out to pay a fee of $250, complete the required registration and waiver forms and show up for one of two sessions at Fieldhouse Sports Complex at 5600 Old Sunrise Hwy. in Massapequa, The first 75 prospects to plunk down the entrance fee get an invite. All candidates must pre-register online and be eligible to play in the NBA G League.
Players will participate in a variety of drills and scrimmages run by team staffers for a chance to earn an invitation to the LI Nets’ training camp in October.
Expect not only the new Long Island GM, Matt MacDonald, and returning head coach, Mfon Udofia, to be on hand. Coaches and front office staff from Brooklyn will also be in Massapequa for the day. Following the tryouts, basketball operations staffers will review the performances and interviews with the candidates and send out the invites.
The sessions are not open to the public.
Over the last several years, Long Island has been able to find talent in the tryouts. Last year, local product Terry Roberts from nearby Amityville made the roster. Two years ago, Kameron Hankerson was selected. He’s appeared in 58 games for Long Island over the past two seasons and played for Brooklyn in the Las Vegas Summer League last month. And three years ago, Craig Randall II went from the tryouts to training camp to being named the G League’s Most Improved Player.
Roberts is recovering from gun shot wounds he suffered in an incident in Philadelphia last season where he was an innocent bystander in a shootout. He tried out for the Summer League in July. Hankerson played this summer in the Mexican League. Randall II played for Mayaquez in the Puerto Rican league this summer and will play for a Turkish league team this fall.
The Long Island roster this year will primarily be made up of two-way players, Exhibit 10 camp invites and others signed before the opening of G League season in mid-November. Unlike in past years, the Nets didn’t make any selections in June’s NBA Draft.
Jaylen Martin is the lone two-way currently under contract. The 6’6” wing was a two-way for the Knicks last year as well as the Nets. He averaged 10 points in the Summer League. The Nets have two other two-way slots open. Also likely to get some time in Long Island are three Exhibit 10s signed this summer: former lottery pick Killian Hayes, a 6’5” point guard who started 145 games for the Pistons over four years before being cut in February, as well as two Summer League players: 6’6” wing KJ Jones II of Emmanuel, the Division II Player of the Year, and 6’2” Villanova point guard Mark Armstrong. Expect news of more signings in the next couple of weeks.
