Duck Woods team finishes second in state championships

Members of the Duck Woods Country Club finished in second place at the 55+ 3.0 Women’s Doubles Spring USTA North Carolina state championships in Asheville at the end of May.
It was the second consecutive year the team made it to the states finals. In 2023 co-captains Diane Rohan and Penny Lobred guided the team to the semifinals.
This year, partners Rohan and co-captain Maureen Montgomery were 6 and 0 in competition all the way to the finals. Playing against Lake Norman, the Duck Woods team won one and lost two including a tiebreaker.
The eight members who were able to attend state competition included Maureen Montgomery, Diane Rohan, Nicole Bouker, Janet Colegrove, Jan Collins, Anna Hite, Penny Lobred and Lynn Watts. Other teammates who helped them achieve a 7 and 1 record in the regular season included Daphne Akers, Allie Chase, Denise Michaud, Monica Thibodeau and Ginger Webster.
Team members said they appreciated the support of the entire Duck Woods Community, and would like to give a special thanks to Nunu Ugurlu, owner of Nunu Studio, who created the “Make That A Double” logo and t-shirts for the team.
According to the USTA website, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) is the national governing body for tennis in the United States. The not-for-profit organization has more than 700,000 members and is the country’s largest adult competitive tennis league. USTA North Carolina is the state affiliate within USTA Southern which covers nine states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
