Cam Strong makes the ‘obvious choice’ with NC State commitment
Cam Strong committed to NC State football over West Virginia and Georgia Tech. The Wolfpack began laying the foundation of their relationship with the three-star cornerback last fall, and it paid off Friday night.
Strong visited NC State for the first time last October, watching the Wolfpack defeat Marshall before returning later in the fall for the UNC win and again in January for a junior day. Those early visits were pivotal.
After taking officials to each of his top three schools, he decided NC State was the place for him earlier this week. The longstanding connection he already had with the Pack certainly aided his decision.
“It helped me get a feel for the place and build stronger relationships with the coaches,” Strong said. “That played a huge part in it.”
His June 7-9 weekend with the Wolfpack was his first time back around the program since January, but he had already built a basic bond with the program after stopping by multiple times in the past.
At the end of his decision-making process, Strong said NC State felt like the right fit. The Wolfpack’s consistency played a huge role.
“It’s the obvious choice,” Strong said.
Strong nearly committed to the program in January after his junior day visit. He decided to hold off and wait until after official visits. Georgia Tech and West Virginia both pushed for the 6-1 defensive back, but he picked the Pack.
Bonding with the current player helped grow his connection with the program. Sophomore cornerback Brandon Cisse was one of his hosts for the weekend. Both defensive backs are from South Carolina, and the Wolfpack underclassman has been recruiting Strong for a while.
“Playing with him, seeing how he’s doing in the program and learning from him and all of the others in the program will be special,” Strong said.
They spoke on the phone before he announced his decision Friday. Earlier in the week, he FaceTimed head coach Dave Doeren and cornerbacks coach Brian Mitchell to commit privately and kick off a huge week of Wolfpack recruiting.
A conversation with Doeren before leaving campus on his official visit ended up as a key moment in Strong’s recruitment. He made the defensive back feel like a priority for the program. NC State checked a few key boxes.
“It just felt the most comfortable to me,” Strong said. “The coaches always shows love. Everybody in the building always shows love, from the players to every part of the staff.
“Raleigh seems like a great town and a great atmosphere. Starting back when I went on my first visit to the Marshall game, the atmosphere was crazy. Who wouldn’t want to play in a place like that?”
Mitchell maintained his connection with Strong even when the rising senior went a few months without a trip to Raleigh. The Wolfpack assistant reached out often and did not always talk about football. He checked up on the cornerback’s family as well.
“He has just always been there,” Mitchell said.
Strong plans on recruiting four-star safeties Jordan Young and Jontae Gilbert to solidify an elite secondary class. They visited NC State June 19-21.
The cornerback plans on enrolling early in January. He looks forward to playing in NC State’s defense. When they watched film during his official visit, he answered every question. It felt like he had been there before.
After making his collegiate commitment, Strong believes he found the right program for him.
“Right now, I feel like NC State is home for me,” Strong said.
