Three burning questions going into Michigan’s first official visit weekend
Michigan is set to host five Top 150 recruits for official visits. Here is a look at three burning questions going into a pivotal weekend for the Wolverines.
1. Can Michigan make up ground with Meadows & Sanders?
It’s no secret that Michigan is playing from behind with both Top 100 Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman wide receiver Derek Meadows and Top 100 Bellville (Texas) High defensive lineman DJ Sanders. However, this weekend will give the Wolverines an opportunity to improve their stock with both. Michigan has a massive need for a big-bodied wide receiver this cycle, and Meadows would have a chance to play as a true freshman. Michigan needs to hammer that home as Meadows, who has Midwest ties, is very willing to venture further away from home. Sanders has family in the Detroit-metro, and U-M’s recent success and history of developing defensive linemen has definitely piqued his interest. However, Texas A&M is a huge favorite going into official visits. It’s going to take a lot to change that.
2. Can Michigan set the tone for Winston & Jones?
It’s never ideal to go first for official visits, but Michigan will have a great chance to set the tone for both Top 100 Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga defensive back Kainoa Winston and Marco Jones. Every visit moving forward will be compared to Michigan, which can be a good thing as both Winston and Jones are high academic, high character kids that fit the Michigan culture. Right now, Michigan and Penn State seem to be the two schools at the top with Winston. Winston has been to Penn State more and is comfortable with the Nittany Lions. However, Michigan checks a lot of boxes for him on and off the field. Jones has a very competitive recruitment with Alabama, Oregon, Texas and more also involved. But much like Winston, Michigan just seems like a perfect fit.
3. Is Utu really a strong contender to end up in the class?
National pundits were asked about the recruitment of Top 100 Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman offensive lineman Douglas Utu earlier this week, and Michigan was not mentioned. However, the Wolverines do quietly have the lead on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, and there is plenty of optimism coming out of Ann Arbor that Utu could very well end up in the class. Michigan impressed Utu and his family on their spring visit, and new offensive line coach Grant Newsome has made him a top priority over the last several months. Next weekend’s trip to Alabama is huge, and others like Oregon, Tennessee and Washington are still in it. But I do like Michigan’s chances here, and the OV should solidify U-M as a true favorite in this race.
