Myles Hinton, Derrick Moore injury updates: Will the Michigan football starters be healthy after bye week?
Michigan Wolverines football was without several key players in its 27-17 loss to Washington, including three starters in fifth-year senior left tackle Myles Hinton, senior center Dominick Giudice and junior EDGE Derrick Moore.
Head coach Sherrone Moore shared on the ‘Inside Michigan Football’ radio show that the offense should have at least one big reinforcement, Hinton, after this week’s bye with an Oct. 19 clash at Illinois on deck. Graduate Jeffrey Persi started in Hinton’s place at Washington.
“I think fundamentally, we just have to continue to work on the little things, Moore said. “This week is all about us getting better at the little things — the little things make the big things — and get healthy.
“Having Myles Hinton back will be huge for us. I think he’ll be back for next week, but we’ll see how practice goes this week and next week. And then being able to have Jeff Persi play a game and start gives confidence to him, so he has the ability to maybe swing there and get some work, as well.”
Moore didn’t comment on Giudice’s status, but he was pleased with how Michigan senior Greg Crippen stepped in, in what was his first career start.
“I saw it go actually pretty well,” Moore said of the communication between the center and the quarterback. “Cripp handled the environment, and I think it’s helped that he’s traveled, he’s been around these environments, he’s seen it, he’s practiced all these times to be in those environments. So he handled it pretty well. I was pretty happy with his performance, and we’ll see going forward.”
While Derrick Moore hasn’t recorded a full sack yet this season, totaling just 0.5 to go along with 1.5 tackles for loss, he’s a key piece to the line, with the 6-foot-3, 256-pounder having started all five games before missing the last one.
“Yeah, I think he should be ready to go,” Sherrone Moore said of Derrick Moore. “He was trying to push through it and go, but we felt like it would be better for him to just sit out and get ready for this next week.”
Michigan senior TJ Guy started in his place. Moore has been happy with how the EDGE position has played, and senior Josaiah Stewart has been a big part of that, leading the Big Ten with 5 sacks.
“I’ve seen those guys are dominant players,” Moore said of the position. “Those guys can impact the game in so many ways, and they’re great at holding the edge and stopping the run, because the ball doesn’t really get outside on the perimeter in the run game. And then pass rush, those guys are impacting the quarterback all the time. So they’ve done a really good job of holding the edge and continuing to impact the game.”
