Kevin Costner's 'Critical Beatdown' at Cannes Has Him Throwing a Lifeline to 'Yellowstone' Fans
Kevin Costner is counting the days until Horizon: An American Saga, Part One is released. His passion project is headed to theaters on June 28, but the reception he received at the Cannes Film Festival has him nervous about the box office. It’s not just one film coming this summer, part two will be arriving on Aug. 16.
The first part of the four-part Western that Costner helped fund didn’t get the warmest welcome from critics — and he’s getting nervous. That’s why the 69-year-old actor hopes that his Yellowstone fanbase will come through for him and show up to buy a ticket. “Kevin is still holding out hope that the final arbiter of HAASP1 will be the millions of fans who have fueled Yellowstone‘s success over the last five years and made that show, for a time, the biggest thing on television,” a source told Life & Style.

Costner believed in himself throughout the process of making Horizon, even investing an astronomical sum after mortgaging 10 acres of his estate. “I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie,” he told GQ. “It’s not true. I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth. That’s the real number.” While he was advised against making this risky move, the money is spent, and he now has to wait and see how audiences respond.
“Kevin was warned by marketing execs that he could get hit in the press over this film, and that has now happened,” the Life & Style insider added. “The critical beatdown he took in Cannes stings, it stings a lot, but Kevin has defied the odds before and he’s even made massive hits out of movies critics didn’t entirely get at first, most notably 1992’s The Bodyguard.” Yet entertainment habits have changed tremendously with moviegoers since Costner and Whitney Houston took the box office by storm — more people are staying home to watch movies than venturing out to their local theaters.
Costner reportedly doesn’t feel “the film industry behind him on this big swing,” and there is quite a bit of negativity swirling around him. He’s hoping for “his Hollywood ending” and seeking out the support of Yellowstone viewers, who know “he’s got a track record of entertaining people by following his muse and sticking to his principles.” Until then, Costner is holding his breath for the box office results.
