Historic Barber Shop To Reopen In Barnegat
BARNEGAT, NJ — A historic barber shop will reopen Saturday in Barnegat thanks to the local historical society, and will also feature the dedication of a plaque in honor of resident Mary Catherine Kennedy.The barber shop, along with other parts of the Barnegat Historical Society's Heritage Village and Museum, will be open from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 19.It has been closed to the public for the past several years while the society addressed roof and ceiling issues.Initially built as a real estate office in 1880, the building was acquired by George Hopper in 1900, who converted it into a barber shop which became one of the centers of life in Barnegat.In addition to the original barber’s chair and other related items, such as family inscribed shaving mugs that were kept at the barber shop, the building houses various items related to education in the township, including the old school bell and various trophies recognizing past educational achievements and numerous other items reflecting life in Barnegat at the time.As part of the reopening ceremony, a memorial plaque will be dedicated recognizing the many contributions made by Mary Catherine Kennedy during her lifetime both to the society and to education in Barnegat. A lifelong resident of Barnegat, Kennedy dedicated herself to education, both as a member of the society and as a teacher for 48 years. Upon her retirement in 2008, she was rightfully described as a historic icon by school officials. In addition to serving the school system into her early 80s, she served as Barnegat Township Historian for many years.Kennedy continued to participate in activities of the New Jersey Lighthouse Society after her retirement and remained an active, important member of the Historical Society until her passing.
