NOAA Releases Summer Weather Outlook For MN, U.S.
MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota's forecast is "leaning" towards above-normal temperatures this summer, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's newly released seasonal outlook.National Oceanic and Atmospheric AdministrationThere's good news for farmers and gardeners in the forecast. Drought conditions are already significantly better in Minnesota and across the Midwest than last year at this time, thanks to the persistent spring rain. Those conditions are expected to continue. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency issued an alert for the entire state over Mother's Day weekend. Thankfully, the smoke cleared up after about a day.Most Minnesotans will remember the frequent air quality alerts that were a feature of last summer.In 2023, the MPCA issued 22 alerts covering 52 days, blowing past the previous record of 13 alerts covering 42 days in all of 2021, according to the agency.While Minnesota generally saw a red AQI day once every decade previously, in 2023 alone the MPCA has issued 14 red alerts.Most experts think this summer won't be as bad, thanks to improved conditions in Canada, the Star Tribune reported.Here's the specific week-ahead NWS forecast from the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport:Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. South wind 10 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 25 mph.Saturday Night: Clear, with a low around 56. West wind 10 to 15 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight.Sunday: A 30 percent chance of showers after 1pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 77. South wind 5 to 10 mph.Sunday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 61. Southeast wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.Monday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. South southeast wind around 10 mph becoming west in the afternoon. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.Monday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. North northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.Tuesday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 69.
