Young Family and Baby Airlifted to Safety After Becoming Stranded in Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Last week, a young family, including a three-month-old baby, was rescued from Guadalupe Peak after a hiking excursion turned dire due to dehydration and exhaustion. The family was reported to have been stranded nine miles into their hike at the Guadalupe Mountains National Park, as reported by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). According to KTSM, the incident occurred on Tuesday, Aug. 20, with park rangers being alerted at around 4:15 p.m.
At about the time the sun strongly beat down upon the earth, the family had begun their journey mid-morning only to find themselves without water, facing dehydration and heat exhaustion. After alerting the Guadalupe Mountains National Park rangers of their dire situation, DPS swiftly sent an airplane out to locate them from the sky, as detailed by El Paso Times.
Following the airplane's reconnaissance, DPS deployed a helicopter to the scene. "A Tactical Flight Officer (TFO) was deployed from the helicopter to perform a medical assessment on each family member and determined a hoist rescue operation was the best course of action for their safety," explained a DPS spokesperson, as obtained by KVIA. This operation involved airlifting the family and securing them safely into the helicopter one by one.
Once rescued, the family was transported down the mountain to waiting ground rescue teams for further medical care. While DPS did not provide an immediate update on the hikers' conditions, the operation was swift enough to likely have prevented a more severe outcome. The speed and efficiency of the rescue efforts underscore how critical it is to be prepared and to always ensure to have adequate supplies when embarking on such wilderness adventures.
