Peninsula Pilots clinch Coastal Plain League playoff berth by winning East Division’s first-half title
The Peninsula Pilots clinched a Coastal Plain League playoff berth Saturday night, routing the Greenville Yard Gnomes 11-2 before 548 fans in North Carolina to win the East Division’s first-half championship.
The Pilots and Wilmington Sharks both finished 16-8, and Peninsula — on a three-game winning streak — won the tiebreaker by virtue of its 2-0 first-half record against the Sharks.
The Wilson Tobs began Saturday in a three-way tie for first but lost 4-1 to the Morehead City Marlins. Those teams finished 15-9 and tied for third.
Peninsula ensured itself of hosting a first-round playoff game July 28 at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton. The Pilots are scheduled to play 24 second-half contests before that.
Saturday, the Pilots plated two runs in the first inning and remained ahead. They scored in seven of the nine innings and had 15 hits (all singles), including three apiece by Jevin Relaford and Henry Garcia.
Relaford, Trey Morgan and Chris Martinez drove in two runs apiece. Relaford, Garcia, Haiden Walters and Luis Delacruz scored twice each, and Morgan and Walters stole two bases apiece.
Peninsula starter Juan Gil-Franco gave up eight hits and two runs in 3 2/3 innings, but Marcus Dux, Darrell Fletcher-Knight, Olvis Genao and Kenny Leiner combined for 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief. Genao gained the victory by pitching three of those.
