NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Mark Neurohr-Pierpaoli, a former American history teacher at New Brunswick High School (he now teaches in Piscataway), just published a book that details the fascinating history of the city of New Brunswick. His book is called "Legends & Lore of New Brunswick," and it was released Monday, October 7. You can purchase it on Amazon, Barnesandnoble.com or at local retailers starting Monday. The author will hold a book signing at the Rutgers Barnes & Noble at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8."The towering skyline of New Brunswick stands in stark contrast with the swampy ceder forest it emerged from in the late 1600s," reads a description. The city of New Brunswick was originally a Native American Lenni Lenape settlement they called "Ahanderamock." It was colonized by the American colonials and, like Harvard and Princeton, Rutgers was started as a seminary so young men could learn Christianity and become preachers.Neurohr-Pierpaoli spent the past two years meticulously researching the folktales, legends, hidden treasures and witchcraft that all took place on the banks of the Raritan. He explores the pirates that frequented Raritan Bay (Did you know William Kid is rumored to have hidden treasure somewhere along the Raritan River? It still hasn't been found); New Brunswick's key role in winning the American Revolutionary War and secret underground tunnels that connect Rutgers fraternity houses to the river, so booze could be smuggled up during Prohibition. He even gets into secret societies at Rutgers University."It's all true," says the author.Neurohr-Pierpaoli also runs Hub City Tours, which started offering a limited run of "Legends & Lore: A Haunted History of New Brunswick" walking tour, only for the month of October. The walking tours started Oct. 4 and run every weekend through Halloween.
