American Idol is a show that traverses a lot of musical genres. There are country nights, rock nights, 80s nights, and even Disney movie nights. However, in a behind-the-scenes clip from the current season, it seems like the singers have taken a break to deliver a faith-based song, and it has the Internet excited.
Here is a look at what the American Idol contestants sang and what the fans online said about it.
American Idol Contestants Break Into A Worship Song
In a video shared by American Idol contestant Rylie O’Neil, a group of contestants was backstage at the show and broke into a Christian song. They all started singing “The Blessing” by Elevation Worship (via Taste of Country).

Elevation Worship is a contemporary worship group from Elevation Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. They perform in church services and in concerts and tours across the United States. They also have four studio albums and several live albums and have sold 1.5 million albums in the United States. Their fourth album reached 17th on the Christian charts and 42nd on the Indie charts.
“The Blessing” was a 2020 single from the album Graves into Gardens. It was certified platinum and reached No. 2 on the Billboard U.S. Christian singles chart.
When Rylie O’Neil shared it, she wrote, “POV: you’re on the set of American Idol and the Holy Spirit shows up.” This is now all leading to a “Songs of Faith” episode, which will air on Easter Sunday.
American Idol Airing Faith-Based Episode On Easter
With the faith-based song shattering the socials with its release, American Idol also announced it will have a faith-based episode on Easter Sunday. It seems that releasing this video might have been a way to promote the new episode for fans who feel that the reality TV show avoids Christian music.
Easter Sunday is on April 20 and the contestants will all sing faith-inspired songs as part of the competition. There have also been a couple of videos released from this season. One includes James Hill singing his faith-based song. It caused lots of people to praise the performance.
“He is unapologetically a child of God even on a secular stage. Go with GOD”
“Yes!!! Let’s normalize loving God again!”
“He brought Sunday best to American idol you go boy.”
A second video was from Jamal Roberts, and while he was singing “Tennessee Whiskey,” fans praised his voice. They also pointed out that he was raised in church and was previously on Sunday Best, a show about singing worship songs.
Here is a sample of what fans online said about the faith-based performances:
One fan said it was about time this happened, writing, “From what I recall, American Idol wasn’t always this open to worship music so this is beautiful to see God be glorified on national television and backstage.”
Another fan want to see an entire album of worship songs by these singers, saying, “I need a whole album of worship songs sung by this group of people! Wowow.”
Finally, another fan said that they might start watching the show again now, writing, “I stopped watching Idol ……… but this season. I’m loving it. Loving this. For his Glory.”
