Amid Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese Controversy, Fans Blame WNBA Referees After Skylar Diggins-Smith Gets Elbowed
WNBA games are continuing to get intense by the day. After Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese incident this past weekend, we have yet another example of extreme physicality on the hardwood. This time, the events transpired between two formidable squads in the Western Conference. Tonight, Skylar Diggins-Smith went against her previous franchise for the first time this season. Anyhow, the experience turned out to be a bloody one for Storm’s veteran.
A Commissioner’s Cup victory brought with it some agonizing pain for the 5-foot-9 point guard. Apparently, in the third quarter with just 3:30 minutes remaining on the clock, Kahleah Copper grabbed a rebound and made a run to her end in order to grab a fast-break layup for the Phoenix. However, while pushing up through her right hand, Copper’s left elbow gave Smith a rather nasty blow on the face. Consequently, the referee gave Smith a shooting foul and ruled Copper’s unnecessary play as a technical foul.
Following the calls, Skylar Diggins-Smith got the first free technical throw. Mercury’s latest addition followed suit with one free throw. Despite the hard blow, the mother of two left the floor for rest but returned as the third quarter began to substitute Sami Whitcomb. In her 31 minutes of game tonight, the 6x WNBA All-Star grabbed 17 points and was +20 on the floor. She also topped the 80-62 victory with 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.
Apart from Skylar Diggins-Smith, Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark’s stories are also unending
All-in-all the WNBA games are getting quite heated this year around. Not just veterans like Skylar Diggins-Smith but even the rookies are facing some tough physicality and other issues. Just tonight, Angel Reese was ejected from her game after 5 personal fouls and 2 technical fouls and for undermining the referee’s calls.

Previously too, the Chicago Sky got into scrutinizing eyes as Chennedy Carter hip-checked Caitlin Clark in their first matchup of the season. Moreover, the fire of the narrative of everyone hating on the Fever’s golden rookie is only catching more wind with every game they play. Today, they stand as the lone team to have played 11 games in 20 days this season. This has only happened once before back in 2007.
Whether you believe that it’s just Caitlin Clark or not, many would say that if a veteran like Skylar Diggins-Smith can catch a blow to the face and get bloody, maybe it’s just the competitive fire in these women. For now, the Seattle Storm is on a 5-game winning streak and it will be interesting to see if they can continue this for the ultimate prize.
