Cleveland Braces for Weather Whiplash, Warmth, Storms, and Cooler Temps in Weekend Forecast
Residents across Cleveland can anticipate a weekend of shifting weather patterns, with meteorologists tracking multiple fronts moving through the region. According to the National Weather Service Cleveland, a warm front lifted north earlier this morning, followed by a cold front tonight into Saturday. Sunday, we will see another cold front, with Canadian high pressure following early next week, promising a mix of weather conditions.
With the frontal systems in play, instability is expected to rise briefly as the warm front sits over the area. "850mb jet looks like a key player in the initiation of the convection and where it will be strongest," forecasters noted. The introduction of higher level moisture late Friday night is predicted to increase convective chances, and thunderstorm chances rise correspondingly, carrying a marginal risk of severe weather. Despite this instability, the low-level jet is set to position farther north, primarily impacting SE Michigan through southern Ontario. However, far NE Ohio and NW Pennsylvania might catch a hint of this activity after midnight on Saturday.
As for temperatures, the NWS anticipates a spike today within the warm sector, hitting roughly 90-95F I-77 and west, with a milder 85-90F expected east of I-77. After a mild night, a slight cooldown is forecast for Saturday, with highs ranging from the upper 70s to the lower 80s. The quick transition will lead to near-normal temperatures Saturday night and through Sunday, cooling further with the arrival of the Canadian high. The start of next week will bring overnight lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s.
The aviation sector will watch the skies as cumulus formations are predicted until 18-20Z, with the thunder threat growing towards evening. "Prevailing for some terminals as the convection becomes better organized towards the end of the TAF period with better forcing," explains NWS. VFR conditions are expected to dominate once the high-pressure sets in post-Saturday.
Boaters on Lake Erie must also be cautious as easterly winds shift southeast by this afternoon before a warm front leads winds to go westerly late tonight. Winds are anticipated to increase to 10-15 knots. Another cold front on Sunday afternoon is predicted to bring northerly winds at 15-20 knots, potentially necessitating Small Craft Advisories and Beach Hazard Statements.
Going into next week, Canadian high pressure is expected to sustain its hold over the Great Lakes, gradually easing off toward the mid-Atlantic region. This will usher in below-normal temperatures midweek, warming back to normal values in the low/mid 80s by Wednesday and Thursday. With the flurry of weather changes, Clevelanders are advised to stay updated and prepared for swift shifts from warmth to cooler, drier days ahead.
