Netflix’s One Piece Season 2 keeps the casting coming with 4 more
For the third straight day, Netflix has announced more casting news for its hit live-action adaptation of One Piece’s second season.
According to a Deadline exclusive, Callum Kerr of Monarch is taking on the role of Smoker, Fear Street’s Julia Rehwald will be playing Tashigi, Rob Colletti will be Wapol and Ty Keogh will play Dalton. The four join the previously announced cast who are members of the Baroque Works and The Straw Hats’ allies.
One Piece fans, meet your Smoker!
Not to play favorites, but the fans have been anticipating on who the production will cast as Smoker since the character was introduced during the final minutes of the first season’ s finale. Smoker’s face wasn’t revealed in that episode, but eagle-eyed One Piece fans pieced together the clues from his naval uniform and his trademark two cigars.
The Scottish Kerr starred in Hulu’s Monarch as Wade Stellings. He’ll be playing Smoker, a Marine vide admiral and commander of the G-5 Marine base. He’s a seasoned soldier and is known to be a loose cannon. He has his own code of conduct that makes him an honorable man.
Due to his strong build, he also possesses incredible strength. He’s skilled in pursuing and ensnaring his enemies, which is why he’s called the “White Hunter.” Smoker also has excellent hearing and memory. While he may not look it, he’s also highly observant and an intelligent interrogator.
Smoker’s ingestion of the Devil Fruit Moku Moku no Mi allows him to create, control and transform his body into smoke. He also sues his smoke to surround his opponent to trap or bind them. The vice admiral also uses the smoke to power up the engine of his motorbike, the Billower Bike.
His main weapon is a large jitte, with a tip made of Seastone. This material affects Devil Fruit users, but he keeps it hanging in the air so it doesn’t affect him. Smoker also possesses the ability to use two Haki: Busoshoku and Kenbunshoku. The former allows the user to use their own spiritual energy to create an shield around themselves. This can also be used as a weapon. The latter gives the user a sixth sense to sense the presence, strength and emotions of other. It also allows the user to have limited precognitive abilities.
Meet your clumsy swordhand
Rehwald plays Tashigi, a Marine officer who serve under Smoker. He sees her as his protege. While she may be a very proficient sword fighter, she is also quite clumsy. Besides being a good sword wielder, she also has an encyclopedic knowledge of blades. However, she can also be quite absentminded.
Tashigi is described as being brave and reckless, and often relies on her speed and agility in combat. Like her mentor, Tashigi can also use both the Busoshoku and Kenbubshoku Haki.
Colletti plays Wapol, the former king of the Drum Kingdom. When he inherited the crown from his father, he turned out to be a spoiled and corrupt king, which ruined his kingdom. But while he’s spoiled and selfish, he’s also surprisingly cunning. Probably to make up for his lack of combat experiencing, relying mainly on his minions to attack.
Wapol ingested the Devil Fruit Baku Baku no Mi, which allows him expand his mouth, eat almost anything and then transform his body to whatever he ate in the last 24 hours. This means he can also reconfigure whatever he ate, regurgitate them, and create something new from them. Lovely.
One interesting thing he can do is to devour his own body, until only his lower jaw remained, then regurgitate his himself with his body temporarily changed to a form better used for battle.
Keogh plays Dalton, the now elected king of the Sakura Kingdom (formerly the Drum Kingdom). He used to be one of Wapol’s Royal Guards. He’s a brave warrior and an honorable man. Dalton is also a powerful fighter and has considerable leadership skills.
He ingested the Devil Fruit Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Bison which allows him to transform into a bison and a hybrid between that and a human — like a minotaur. This Devil Fruit’s main advantage, though, is not enhanced strength but speed. In his bison or minotaur shape, Dalton can run faster than in his human state. His main weapon is his sword. However, in his bison form, he uses the Fiddle Banff.
One Piece’s second season is definitely stacking its deck with characters. It gives credence to the rumor that season three is being filmed back-to-back with season two. However, fans will have to impatiently wait for the second season that may be released some time in 2025 since filming is expected to end early next year.
