Murray was on the Nuggets bench when the incident occurred with 4:41 remaining in the second quarter on Monday night.
Reigning NBA champions Denver trailed 49-30 as Murray was spotted hurling the pad into the live action, where it landed in the paint.
Officials didn’t spot the object, which was quickly removed from the court by Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
“That’s dangerous,” gasped analyst Reggie Miller on the TNT broadcast.
Following Minnesota’s 109-80 win, head coach Chris Finch called Murray’s act “inexcusable.”
Finch found it bizarre that officials hadn’t followed up with Murray on the incident after the pad landed so clearly amongst the action.
“I’m sure it was a mistake and an oversight and nothing intentional by the officiating at all, but certainly can’t allow that to happen,” he said.
“The @NBA CANNOT let their players get away with that,” gasped one fan on X in response to the footage.
“Should be suspended for this,” said another.
“Edwards got a tech in game 1 for looking at someone,” commented a third.
Crew chief Marc Davis admitted to reporters following the contest at the Ball Arena that Murray should’ve been hit with a technical foul.
“I was the lead official, and I didn’t notice it was on the floor or where it came from until Towns scored,” Davis said, per ESPN.
“We weren’t aware it had come from the bench.
“If we would have been aware it came from the bench, we could have reviewed it under the hostile act trigger.
“The penalty would have been a technical foul.”

“For an ejection, you would have to determine it was thrown directly at somebody versus thrown in frustration,” he added.
Murray suffered another frustrating night as the Timberwolves took a 2-0 series lead in the Conference semifinals.
The 27-year-old Canadian gathered in 13 rebounds but scored just 8 points as he went 3 for 18 from the field.
He exited the arena following the contest without speaking to reporters, per ESPN.
Game 3 of the series is set for Friday night in Minnesota.
“It’s going to be interesting how the Nuggets are going to look in Game 3 without Murray because he’s most likely getting suspended for throwing that Heat Pack,” wrote ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins on X.
