Lincoln public schools seeing increase in enrollment this year
LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) — Thousands of kids are having their first day in school on Tuesday including in Lincoln.
Superintendent Dr. Lawrence Filippelli said the district is increasing students where many others are decreasing, so they are accommodating through some facility upgrades.
"It's time to really pay attention to the elementary schools. We're starting with our largest elementary school which is Northern Elementary which is roughly about 500 students, so that's getting the full HVAC upgrade we're starting the project now," Dr. Filippelli said.
When do RI, Mass. students go back to school?
The project will be done by Summer 2025, but as for this year, Northern Elementary School will be implementing a new traffic pattern for drop-off.
"We have a new drop off for minibuses because that holds our preschool program there is a regular bus they will line up pretty much where they were last year, but the traffic pattern will be completely different," said Dr. Filippelli. "Parents are going to go in where they normally would go in, but they're going to route in the back of the school up and around to accommodate all the people for drop off."

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Filippelli said they are seeing more students get dropped off for school, but he encourages parents to have their kids take the bus instead to help with traffic flow.
The district is also still seeing students impacted by learning loss from the pandemic.
"There have been certain grades that have been impacted more than others, but we are still focusing our attention on the social-emotional component of things because we saw a big impact there really at fourth and ninth grade which of course they're going to be 5th and 10th," Dr. Filippelli explained.
