“It’s important for blockbuster movies”: DC Star Defended Strong Female Characters in Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean Way Before Margot Robbie Spinoff
If there are franchises that have played a significant role in promoting strong female characters, then, Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean has played a crucial role in showcasing such characters. These characters have broken away from traditional gender roles, and brought a unique development to the film, by complementing the male characters of the film, which made the series much more layered and engaging.

Elizabeth Swann and Calypso are the two most renowned female characters from the series, who have undergone significant transformation and played an active part in the development of the storyline of the series. However, some have criticized empowered female characters, and Brenton Thwaites has come forward to silence them as he comments on the importance of such characters in a hit film series.
Brenton Thwaites Supports The Decision To Feature Powerful Women in Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean
Johnny Depp’s Pirates of the Caribbean is renowned for featuring iconic female characters who have left an indelible mark on the viewers of the film. All of them defied the traditional norms of that period. The shift in power dynamics and showcasing the brevity and cunning nature made the films utterly unpredictable.

Hence, the franchise was so successful in creating a more inclusive and adventurous world, which broadened the appeal and targeted different audiences for a diverse audience group. During an exclusive interview with CoupDeMain, Brenton Thwaites was asked if it’s “important for blockbuster films to include strong female characters?”

The Titans actor answered how he believes, it is necessary to feature strong characters in general. However, he believed it was different back then, and gave the example of Kaya’s characters breaking the mold.

He said,
Yeah, I think it is. I think it’s important for blockbuster movies to include strong characters in general. But, yeah I think so. We’re seeing it more and more these days, which is cool, and modern, and how it should be.
But also, I guess back in those days it was different, so it’s nice to see Kaya’s character breaking outside the mould… you know, fighting for things that women in those times didn’t really fight for.
It was interesting how Thwaites shared his thoughts on how strong female characters are essential and now, it looks like our beloved pirate series featuring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow is receiving a spin-off film featuring Margot Robbie.
The Pirates of the Caribbean Franchise Might Feature a Margot Robbie-Centric Spin-off Film
For ages, there have been several reports about how the future of our beloved franchise is up in the air because some believed that a reboot is happening that will feature a new cast and get rid of our favorite characters. Several rumors soon started to circulate on how The Suicide Squad actress will be in the lead role replacing the Rango actor.

However, Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of the film series has come forward to set things straight and shed light on the future of the franchise. During an exclusive interview with EW, Bruckheimer mentions that “it’s two different movies,” and how everyone at Disney wants Robbie’s spin-off film to become a reality,
He said,
It’s two different movies. We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.
The Birds of Prey actress had also previously mentioned back in 2022 to Vanity Fair how they have an “idea” and want Disney to make the film but none of them are too interested in doing it. She said,
We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.
With none of them confirming that a spin-off film will get a green light, the future of the film is up in the air. However, fans would be immensely disappointed if Depp does not return to the franchise to reprise his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow.
