Drew Carey has been The Price is Right host for many years. He replaced the amazing Bob Barker and has been running the show ever since. This month, the popular game will celebrate a huge milestone episode, and Drew will be there leading the way. However, according to the host, things have not always gone as well. He at one time attempted suicide and has revealed where his depression issues originated.
Here is what Drew said about his mental health struggles ahead of the big Price is Right milestone episode.
Drew Carey Talks Depression Issues
It seems like Drew Carey has it all. He has been hosting The Price is Right for several years. His comedy masterpiece, The Drew Carey Show, is also about to celebrate its 30th anniversary. However, Drew said it has not always been good, and he still struggles with depression and mental health issues.

Drew Carey said his depression issues hit when he was young. His dad died when he was eight, and he started to become a nail-biter. However, he said what really made things worse was church.
“I was an evangelical Christian when I was in junior high and high school, and that brought a lot of [negative feelings] into my life,” Drew said. “I felt I was never good enough because I was a sinner, and everything was always going to be bad. I did learn good moral lessons about treating people nicely and turning the other cheek that stuck with me. But I had a lot of shame and self-hate. It was so overwhelming.”
Drew said he had to get away from that. When he was 18, he started reading self-help books that helped save him. This happened after he attempted suicide by drinking beers and taking a bottle of sleeping pills.
“I told my fraternity brothers, “Hey, I just took all these pills,” and they took me to the medical center,” Drew remembered. “While I was throwing up over the toilet, my friend Paul was holding my shoulders, and he started singing the jingle: ‘Take Sominex tonight and sleep… sleep… sleep.’ I laughed so hard. It made me feel so much better being able to joke about it.”
Drew said he still sees a therapist, something he recommends to everyone.
Drew Carey About To Celebrate Price Is Right Milestone
Drew Carey was also asked about the upcoming milestone 10,000th episode of The Price is Right. The game show has only had two hosts in its history, with Bob Barker and Drew Carey. Combined, the two men have hosted almost 10,000 shows.

While we revealed the 10,000th episode is coming in February, Drew finally announced when the episode will officially air. The Price is Right 10,000th episode will air on February 26, and the show will surely have some big moments for players and fans to celebrate this amazing achievement.
“It’s wild, isn’t it? Sometimes I have to pinch myself: Wow, what a life! Not, “Look at all this stuff I got,” Drew said. “I am really grateful, but that’s not my main focus. Mostly I ask myself, “Am I still growing? Am I still engaged in the world in the way I want to be?”
