Tua Tagovailoa concussion: Tony Gonzalez pleas for Dolphins QB to seriously consider retiring
Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa suffered another concussion on Thursday Night Football against the Buffalo Bills, his fourth in the past three years. The incident left many people across the country questioning whether or not he should continue playing the game of football. One of them was Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez, who let everyone know he thinks the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback should seriously consider hanging it up for good.
“It’s so sad. Guy just got paid, we’re talking about it on the pregame show. It was great to be Tua. And it is great to be Tua. However, I’m looking at these concussions, and I’ve been getting texts, you know people that I played with, that played in the league, we’ve been talking about it,” Gonzalez explained.

“If I’m him, at this point, I’m seriously considering retiring from football. If that was my son, I’d be like ‘it might be time.’ This stuff is not what you want to play around with, and when you’re in the fencing position, I’m not a doctor, but I’ve heard that’s when your brain is really, really shutting off. And he’s done that a couple times now. Did that tonight,” Gonzalez noted.
More on Tua Tagovailoa and his injury history
Tagovailoa has a lengthy history of concussions in the NFL, with his first being suffered in Week 3 of the 2022 season against Buffalo. After being cleared to play four days later, also on Thursday Night Football, an ambulance had to be brought out for Tagovailoa after taking a hit to the head vs. the Cincinnati Bengals.

His status became a big talking point around the sport, wondering how he was cleared to play in the game. The moment being in a primetime slot certainly did not help.
Last year was an injury-free one for the quarterback. He played and started in all 17 games, leading Miami to its first 11-win season since 2008 and most importantly, the NFL playoffs. Everyone was hoping similar results would take place in 2024 but there is a concussion to deal with moving forward.
Miami does have an extended period off before their next game. Playing on Thursday means an extra three days of rest for everyone on the roster. Sunday, Sept. 22 against the Seattle Seahawks will be the next time the Dolphins take the field, traveling out West.
