Christian McCaffrey injury update: 49ers RB seeing specialist in Germany for Achilles issues
San Francisco 49ers (1-2) star running back Christian McCaffrey has yet to suit up this season, and it appears his stay on injured reserve could last even longer than the minimum four games.
Adam Schefter of ESPN said on “Monday Night Countdown” that McCaffrey, who has been dealing with an Achilles injury since the start of training camp, traveled over to Germany this past weekend to meet with a specialist to “consider what is wrong with his Achilles tendinitis.” He is expected to spend a few days there this week as he receives examination.

McCaffrey, 28, is coming off a season in which he won the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award after posting 1,459 rushing yards, 564 receiving yards and 21 total touchdowns.

49ers playing without several stars on offense, including Christian McCaffrey
Despite being without McCaffrey through the first three games, San Francisco has continued to put up big numbers on offense. The 49ers own the league’s No. 3 offense and are averaging 139.7 yards on the ground. Jordan Mason is second in the NFL with 324 rushing yards, proving to be a more than capable replacement for McCaffrey.
But there’s no doubt, however, that San Francisco desperately wants McCaffrey back on offense. The same goes for receiver Deebo Samuel (calf) and tight end George Kittle (hamstring), who didn’t play in Sunday’s 27-24 Week 3 road defeat to the Los Angeles Rams (1-2).
“Injuries are always a part of [the game],” head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “We’ve had to deal with it a number of years, sometimes more than others. I think last year, just mainly with some of our main guys, we were very fortunate they didn’t miss too many games.
“This year, it’s been totally different to start out, so that’s been real tough. I’d like to try to stay positive with it, that all of them, eventually, are going to come back, but that probably changed with Hargrave today. That was a tough pill to swallow there. But, yeah, we definitely haven’t had the luck that we had last year.”
