Mets confirm Griffin Canning’s ruptured Achilles in devastating injury blow

PITTSBURGH — What appeared obvious to the Mets a night earlier became reality Friday when Griffin Canning was diagnosed with a ruptured left Achilles, ending his season.
The right-hander needed help leaving the field in his start against the Braves after rupturing the tendon on a pitch in the third inning.
He underwent surgery Friday and the expected recovery time is at least nine months, according to manager Carlos Mendoza.
Canning was enjoying a breakout season with the club, in which he pitched to a 3.77 ERA in 16 starts.
The Mets signed Canning last offseason to a one-year contract worth $4.25 million after he struggled with the Angels.

“It sucks because this is a guy that had a hard year last year,” Mendoza said before the Mets opened a weekend series against the Pirates at PNC Park. “It was tough for him and he put in a lot of work in the offseason and we signed him and he was very open to the information and the feedback and everything we had to offer.
“For him not just to take the information but actually go out there and execute and have the year he was, he was pretty consistent for us and part of the reason we’re in the position we’re in is because of him. You hate to see it but knowing the personality of Griff, he’ll get through this one.”
Blade Tidwell was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse and will take Canning’s rotation spot. Tidwell, 24, has started twice for the Mets this season, most recently in Philadelphia last weekend, and has pitched to a 9.82 ERA.

Canning’s injury was just the latest blow for a rotation that in just over the last two weeks has also lost Kodai Senga to a strained right hamstring and Tylor Megill to elbow inflammation.
The Mets returned a starter this week, with Frankie Montas’ activation from the injured list, but Sean Manaea’s rehab was pushed back after he received a cortisone shot for a loose body in his left elbow.
Manaea has been rehabbing an oblique strain since spring training.

It leaves the Mets with David Peterson, Clay Holmes, Paul Blackburn, Montas and Tidwell for this iteration of the rotation.
Senga and Megill aren’t expected back before the All-Star break and the extent of Manaea’s absence remains murky.
He was scheduled to play catch Friday, according to Mendoza.

Mendoza wouldn’t commit to Tidwell for more than starting against the Brewers on the next homestand.
The right-hander is hoping the ability to go through a normal routine — his first two starts for the Mets were on short notice — will help him this time.
“It means a lot that the organization trusts me to come up and do this,” Tidwell said. “I know the circumstances aren’t good, but I am praying for Griffin. It’s a good opportunity for me to be up here and I am just going to try to take advantage of that.”

Despite the injuries, the Mets began the day with a 3.11 ERA from their starting pitchers, which ranked first in MLB.
The Mets’ 3.21 ERA overall also ranked first.
The Mets had managed to keep all the starting pitchers with whom they began the season in line until 2 ½ weeks ago when Senga was injured covering first base.
“It’s part of the game,” Mendoza said. “Our medical group is probably one of the best in the business and it’s just an unfortunate situation [with Canning]. He wasn’t even attempting to make a play. It’s just a freak injury.”
