“I didn’t know until today”: Knull’s Co-Creator is Expecting a Boat Load of Money After Sony Reveals Its Thanos Level Villain For Tom Hardy’s Venom: The Last Dance
Knull, an ancient primordial god and the creator of symbiotes, first debuted in Marvel long after Venom already made his presence known. But with a single appearance, he became a threat more terrifying and brutal than most of the known villains under Marvel’s vast umbrella. Such a feat went on to establish Knull as a compelling antagonist more powerful than the ones fans have witnessed in live-action to date.

Created by Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman, Knull began his journey as an Elder God with the power to create, control, and manipulate eldritch darkness – a manifestation of the primordial void that existed before the universe itself. Knull’s later reckoning as a force of evil made him a creature of the shadows with an eternal longing for cruelty and vengeance.
Ironically, his own tragic story that led to the birth of the symbiotes caused his creations to later turn their back on him, launching him into a cosmically fatal war against Venom.
Knull: Origin, Descent & Marvel Debut
At the dawn of time, a cosmic war between light and darkness pitted Knull and the Celestials against each other. Crowned as the King in Black and delegated to rule his kingdom of darkness, Knull’s original purpose was to oversee the conception of Celestials. However, when their Light of Creation encroached into the land of shadows and the malevolent god woke to see his kingdom on the brink of collapse, his retaliation was violent.

With his first-born symbiote, Knull forged All-Black the Necrosword from the darkness of the Abyss. Famously known as the Godslayer, the Necrosword (which debuted in Thor: God of Thunder issue #6) is not only the first symbiote to ever exist in the known Marvel universe but it also made its MCU debut alongside Christian Bale‘s Gorr the God Butcher in the widely criticized Chris Hemsworth film, Thor: Love and Thunder.
Meanwhile, Knull’s existence became a fabled tale of insidious villainy that positioned him as one of the most feared creatures in the entire Marvel universe. The threat to his kingdom led the ancient god to create his own host of symbiotes to ravage, corrupt, and destroy civilizations across the universe. But despite the extent of his powers, Knull’s innately evil nature made an enemy out of his symbiote army, leading them into a rebellion against their own dark creator.
Venom: The Last Dance Can Save Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
With Tom Hardy spearheading the final chapter of his Venom trilogy, Sony’s Spider-Man universe finally gets to witness its first successful franchise getting the closure it deserves. Despite the studio’s previous attempts to cash in on its registry of Spider-Man-affiliated IPs, every project ended at the bottom of the box office industry’s superhero pile, earning less and ranking even worse in critical and commercial opinion.

The arrival of Knull in Hardy’s Venom outro can finally introduce a character that can link Sony’s overarching universe under a single, unifying purpose. No longer will the audience need to suffer through another Morbius and Madame Web. Instead, Knull will rise as a powerful force of evil in the background, mirroring Thanos in the MCU’s Infinity Saga, and bring together every Spider-Man-affiliated IP in a team-up epic to defeat their common enemy.
Incidentally, the creator of Knull, Ryan Stegman has also come to understand the impact of his character’s introduction in live-action cinema (and the royalties associated with the film’s success), wittily claiming via Twitter:
Yes, I did co-create knull. No, I didn’t know until today that he was gonna be in Venom: The Last Dance. Yes, I do expect to finally be able to afford that lazy river moat around my house— Ryan "x-men man" $tegman (@RyanStegman) September 12, 2024
The final trailer of Venom: The Last Dance made a grand revelation by announcing the coming of Knull. Although Marvel dropped the ball on using the character as a worthy villain in Thor: Love and Thunder, perhaps Sony can finally learn from the mistakes of its past and exploit the IP to rebrand its Spider-Man-centric universe.
Venom: The Last Dance premieres on October 24, 2024 in theaters worldwide.
