One Thing to Know Before Visiting Universal's Monsters-Themed Land—Spoilers!

Halloween Horror Nights not your scene? Dark Universe delivers monster fun without the frights. If you're a fellow scaredy cat and worried whether the monsters-themed land at Universal Epic Universe is going to be too intense, rest assured that it's notHalloween Horror Nights. You can enter the village of Darkmoor knowing you're not going to be terrified, making the experience all the more enjoyable without the stress of being on edge or bracing for jump scares."It's different. It is just different from Horror Nights," Frances Franceschi, a production designer at Universal Orlando Resort, tells Parade, noting that they cater to the "family demographic within" the lands at Universal Epic Universe.

"It's so great to have Horror Nights, but we still wanted Dark Universe to be its own thing and stand on its own, and Horror Nights still be what Horror Nights is, and have its own following and everything," Franceschi says. "The two are separate, but of course, they feed each other in the sense that there is that spooky undertone and both have that."Dark Universe, one of the five incredibly immersive worlds at Epic Universe, is more atmospheric than it is frightening. "The real drive was full immersion. That was really it," Franceschi shares. "It's one thing to just see something, but it's another thing when you can like feel the fog rolling over the rocks and like spilling onto you, or experiencing the heat that comes out of the flame organ for Phantom of the Opera." "We make sure that that immersion is like a full immersive experience. We make sure to try to hit all of those points so that it's not just something visually, it's something that you can also feel as well, so that was really taken into account for design of the world, but also our attractions as well," the Universal creative continues.Related: I Ate My Way Through Universal Epic Universe, Here’s What You Can’t Miss When You GoThe family-friendly land, home to Universal Monster legends like Dracula, the Wolf Man and Frankenstein's Monster, features two attractions: Curse of the Werewolf and Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment. Within the ominous world at Epic Universe, guests will also find De Lacey's Cottage (be sure to get the donut bites!), the Das Stakehaus restaurant and the Burning Blade Tavern, whose windmill periodically catches fire."We feel like we took a chance on [this land]," Franceschi admits. "We hadn't done anything like this, specifically with the Universal Monsters, so it feels just so rewarding that we're receiving all of the love that the world has received so far."And that chance has certainly paid off! For an epic experience packed with monsters and atmosphere, Dark Universe delivers a monstrously good time.

When did Dark Universe open?Dark Universe, along with Epic Universe's four other immersive worlds, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk and Celestial Park, officially opened on May 22, 2025.Where is Dark Universe located? The monsters-themed land within Universal Epic Universe is located at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida. Are the rides at Dark Universe scary? [Spoilers ahead]Coming from a HHN scaredy cat, I can confirm that the two Dark Universe attractions are not frightening. With the dark ride Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment you needn't be concerned with monsters getting up close to your face. Same goes for the Curse of the Werewolf, which is a short, but very fun spinning roller coaster. Next, All the Rides at Universal Epic Universe, Including the Secret Attraction, Ranked
