Viewers of Deadliest Catch know well how dangerous the waters can be for those working on the fishing vessels. Recently, news has come out that one crew member who had been featured on the show was found dead. Fans may remember the crew member, Jacob Riley Veeser, as having served onboard F/V Lady Alaska.

Fans Last Saw Jacob Veeser’s Vessel On Season 17 Of Deadliest Catch
Deadliest Catch, which first premiered in 2005, depicts the lives of various crab fisherman who work during various crabbing seasons amid the Bering Sea. As the show’s name makes clear, their work is dangerous, with crew members often risking their lives.

Recently, a crew member who had been featured on the show, was found dead. Sources identified the figure as Jacob Riley Veeser, who worked on the F/V Lady Alaska vessel.

According to The Daily Mining Gazette, Veeser was described as an Escanaba native. He had been working on vessels in the Bering Sea for about nine years prior.

Veeser was recently working on F/V Lady Alaska, which had been featured on the Discovery Channel program. Fans of the show may remember Peter Liske and Scott Campbell Jr. serving as the ship’s captain during different seasons. The vessel was last seen on the show in 2021 during Season 17.

According to reports, back in April, the Unalaska Police Department was called in to investigate after Veeser had gone missing. He was last seen around midnight at a dock for UniSea, Inc.’s processing facility. A missing person’s post for Veeser was also shared on social media around this time.

The Search Was Also Impacted By A Storm In The Area
A storm had been in effect when Veeser went missing. Travel advisories at the time warned of “high winds and blowing snow causing whiteout conditions” and “snow accumulation and slippery roads.”

The search for Veeser resumed the following morning. Eventually, members of the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska State Troopers, and the Unalaska Police and Fire Departments got involved with the search.

Tragically, Veeser’s body was found in the water along Captains Bay Road. His remains were recovered by the Unalaska Fire Department.

Veeser was around 28 at the time of his death. At the time, authorities shared they would be investigating the incident and that Veeser’s next of kin had been notified.

Fans of the show know quite well how dangerous conditions can be for fishermen on the show. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, producer Ben Staley shared, “I’ve seen a lot of fishermen fall in the water. I’ve seen cameramen fall in the water and have to go to the hospital.”

“And then here we are in this situation where the boat is getting slammed against the dock, and it’s pulling out, and it’s stretching lines, and you had literally two or three seconds where the boat was close enough to the dock where you could actually get on it. If you missed, or you slipped, you would fall between the dock and the boat, and you would be crushed.”
