American Idol is thinking about bringing back a heartfelt tradition that fans and contestants really loved. Viewers have not cared for some changes that the show has made over the last few seasons. So, what may be returning in the near future? Keep reading for more details.
American Idol To Bring Back Heartfelt Tradition
There have been many things that American Idol fans do not care for now that the show has moved networks and judges have changed. One issue is that there are three finalists rather than two, which was always very special. Too many cooks in the kitchen, and that can be off-putting to some. Along with that, it has been hard watching the contestants’ sob stories. Fans want to stick to the talent and music rather than being swayed by their heartbreaking backgrounds. Whether or not that will change is yet to be seen, but one thing that may return is the sweet exits for the final twelve.

Years ago, it was tradition to look back on the singers’ journey on Idol, all of the sweet moments, and making it far. The person voted off would even sing their way out of the show, but all that appears to be gone. Now, the question of bringing back the finale montage has come up. Show EP, Megan Michaels Wolflick, has been asked about the grand exits returning. She shared that this could happen, but noted why it was eliminated:
“The Daniel Powter, if you will? ‘Had a Bad Day’? [Laughs] Well, that worked because we had a results show. We had a second show where the whole hour was dedicated to the results, so we could have that moment. Now, with the real-time voting and the coast-to-coast live voting, it’s so difficult to have that proper [goodbye], unfortunately. We want to make sure that the two hours are jam-packed with music and everything else going on.”
So, there is a method to the madness, and it was not just erased for fun. Yet, is this enough of a reason to satisfy viewers?
American Idol fans can always say to cut the backstories so that this moment can be made possible. It has been brought up, and this has been desperately missed. Megan added that she wished they had extra time to say goodbye:
“But yes, at the end of the day, if we could have an extra two minutes to look back at each person’s journey, that would be lovely.”
The Change Is Hard
In 2024, American Idol viewers struggled with the changes in the show. They noted that they felt like contestants were just discarded, no chance to say a proper goodbye. That was a hard pill to swallow after following them on the journey of a lifetime. One person had this commentary:
Than during the live shows the contestants are eliminated like they’re nothing, no tribute or anything at all to them, they’re lucky if the judges even have a small parting word for them. While that’s sure different from the judges you were dealing with in audition week who were hugging you while you were crying as they encouraged you to spill out all the emotional baggage you hold in your life.
This would be welcomed if it were to come back, even in a shorter format. The contestants have worked so hard, and they more than deserve a proper sendoff.
