Channing Tatum’s 23 Jump Street tease gives fans hope
Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill have seemed to move on from the 23 Jump Street idea. However, the former recently discussed the project and seemingly gave some hope in regards to getting it made.
Speaking to ComicBook.com, Tatum called the ditched 23 Jump Street script the “best” he has read for a threequel. It was heavily rumored to be a crossover with the Men in Black series which seemed to work according to Tatum.
“There is a project that was written and it’s still the best script that I’ve ever read for a third movie,” he said.
Later in the interview, Tatum revealed that his co-star Jonah Hill wants to make it. With that, perhaps the long-rumored third movie can finally happen. Tatum seemed to want to manifest it.
“You know what, I’m going to put some good juju out there and I’m going to say I would love to see 23 Jump Street,” Tatum said. “I would love to do it with Jonah, and I know [Jonah] wants to do it. We would love to just get to go play again.”
The 21 Jump Street franchise
It has been years since the Jump Street franchise has been on the big screen. 21 Jump Street with Tatum and Hill premiered in 2012 with a sequel, 22 Jump Street, coming two years later.
Unfortunately, in the decade since, a third movie has not been made. As ComicBook.com notes, Sony Pictures had a company-wide data breach in 2014. This resulted in conversations of Spider-Man going to the MCU and a Miles Morales animated movie (Into the Spider-Verse) — both of which came to fruition.
A Men in Black and 23 Jump Street crossover has not been made, though. For one reason or another, Sony did not pull the trigger unlike some of the other ideas in the emails.
It is not as if the Jump Street franchise was not a success. The first movie effectively rebooted the TV series and made over $200 million on a $42 million budget. The sequel made even more, grossing $330 million on a $50 million budget.
As the stars get older, the franchise will have to adapt. Tatum is 44 years old and Hill is 40 years old. In the two movies, they played undercover cops that are station in high school and then college in the sequel. Going with a Men in Black crossover lends itself to sci-fi elements and does not restrict them to being in school.
Plus, in the credits of 22 Jump Street, Tatum and Hill are shown going undercover at various schools. They are pitched as fictional sequels to the movie.
The duo of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed the Jump Street movies. It was their first live-action directorial feature (they previously directed Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs). They have since made The Lego Movie and are heavily involved in the Spider-Verse franchise.
