Who are NYC shooting victims? A Blackstone executive, a cop and new dad-to-be

A Blackstone executive who served on the board of the Met. An NYPD officer and soon-to-be dad of three, working a paid detail on his day off. A 27-year-old woman. A security officer.
Portraits are beginning to emerge Tuesday of the four people who lost their lives when a gunman with an assault rifle stormed a midtown Manhattan office building Monday and opened fire. An NFL employee who was shot was seriously hurt but survived and was last said to be in stable condition.
On Tuesday, Gov. Kathy Hochul ordered flags at state government buildings to be flown at half-staff in honor of the victims. They’ll remain lowered until each of the victims is laid to rest, the governor’s office said.
“Yesterday, New York lost four innocent lives in a horrific act of violence,” Hochul said in a statement. “Among them was NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 3 1/2-year veteran who leaves behind a wife eight months pregnant and two young sons. My heart is with his loved ones, his NYPD family and every victim of this tragedy.”
“The killer used an AR-15–style assault rifle. The same weapon of war used in mass shootings across America.
The shooter, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas with a “documented mental health history,” took his own life, officials say. Investigators are still piecing together a motive.
In the meantime, here’s what we know about the victims so far.
Wesley LePatner, Blackstone real estate executive
Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone real estate executive, was killed in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building July 28, 2025.
Investment firm Blackstone confirmed the death of LePatner in a Tuesday statement. She was 43.
“We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePatner, was among those who lost their lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue,” the company said in a statement. “Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed.”
“She was brilliant, passionate, warm, generous, and deeply respected within our firm and beyond,” it continued. “She embodied the best of Blackstone. “Our prayers are with her husband, children and family. We are also saddened by the loss of the other innocent victims as well, including brave security personnel and NYPD.”

LePatner served on several boards, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Abraham Joshua Heschel School and The UJA-Federation of New York. Most recently at Blackwell, she served as the Global Head of Core+ Real Estate and the Chief Executive Officer of Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust (BREIT).
The president of the executive committee and the head of school at Heschel sent an email to the community mourning LePatner’s passing.
“Wesley was murdered at Blackstone where she worked. Wesley was the mother of Jonathan in 7th grade; the mother of Emerson; the wife of Evan; the daughter of Larry and Ellyn Mittman; and a beloved relative and friend to so many,” the statement said in part. “There are no right words for this unfathomable moment of pain and loss. It was a rare z’chut, a rare privilege, to know Wesley and to learn from her.”
LePatner was also a member of Blackstone Real Estate’s Investment Committee. She previously served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Core+ business as well as BREIT. Before joining Blackstone in 2014, Ms. LePatner spent over a decade at Goldman Sachs. She got her bachelor’s degree in history from Yale.
Blackstone’s offices at 345 Park Avenue will be closed to employees on Tuesday, the company told NBC News.
Didarul Islam, NYPD officer
NYPD officer Didarul Islam was killed in a shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building July 28, 2025.
The officer who was killed was Didarul Islam, 36, an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served as a police officer in New York City for just over three years, police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.
Islam leaves behind two young boys, and his wife is pregnant with their third child, Tisch said.
“He was doing the job that we asked him to do. He put himself in harm’s way. He made the ultimate sacrifice,” the police commissioner said at a press conference Monday night. “He died as he lived. A hero.”
The cousin of the slain officer spoke about his loss.
Muhammad Mainul Islam, the imam of a Bronx mosque, said his cousin was a “very pious person” who regularly attended the mosque for worship. Many members of the Bangladeshi community called and visited Islam’s family after hearing about the shooting, he said.
“He is very nice guy, and his behavior is very good,” the cousin said, adding he misses him.
Islam’s pregnant wife is scheduled to give birth to their third child next month, Muhammad Mainul Islam said.
“She’s okay, but they are very tired, and always they are crying,” he said about Islam’s wife and two children.
Muhammad said the family is preparing for Islam’s funeral once his body is released by the hospital and the medical examiner’s office.
Aaland Etienne, security officer
Police sources confirmed Tuesday a 46-year-old man who was shot in the lobby was among the dead.
32BJ of Service Employees International Union President Manny Pastreich identified the individual in a statement as Aland Etienne, “a dedicated security officer who took his job duties extremely seriously.”
“We have been in touch with Aland Etienne’s family and are working with building management and the NYPD to support their investigation,” the statement said. “We are ensuring our members in the building receive the free union counseling and support services they deserve and need to manage this unspeakable loss.”
“This tragedy speaks to the sacrifice of security officers who risk their lives every day to keep New Yorkers and our buildings safe,” it continued. “Every time a security officer puts on their uniform, they put their lives on the line. Their contributions to our city are essential, though often unappreciated. Aland Etienne is a New York hero. We will remember him as such.”
27-year-old woman, Rudin Management employee
Police sources also confirmed a 27-year-old woman shot on the 33rd floor was among the dead. Her name has not been released. Rudin Management identified her as one of its own.
It released a statement on behalf of the company, withholding the employee’s name at her family’s request.
“The Rudin family and everyone at our company are devastated by yesterday’s senseless tragedy,” the statement said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those injured and lost last night, including our cherished Rudin colleague, a brave New York City police officer, a beloved lobby security guard and an employee at a tenant firm.”
“We are grateful to the NYPD, FBI, EMS and multiple other emergency responders for their swift and courageous action,” it continued. “We also thank the Mayor and Police Commissioner for their leadership. The building will remain closed today as the authorities continue their investigations. As New Yorkers, we stand shoulder to shoulder in the face of this hatred, we grieve with the families and loved ones of those lost, and we pray for the full recovery of those injured.”
