Rowan County Sheriff's Office Seeks Public Help to Identify Suspect in China Grove Arson Attempt

Authorities in Rowan County are intensifying efforts to identify a suspect in an arson case from last month, and are seeking help from the public. The suspect is accused of attempting to set fire to an outbuilding on a property on Weaver Road in China Grove on August 18, wielding a can of fuel. Surveillance footage from the home captured the individual, prompting an investigation by local law enforcement.
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, alongside detectives, has been working to piece together the events of that night. Minimal damage was reported to the outbuilding, with additional damage to the grille of a Ford F250 pickup truck, QC News reported. Despite the potential for extensive harm, the homeowner was present during the incident and was able to extinguish the fire quickly.
In response to this incident, the sheriff’s office is actively asking for assistance. They encourage anyone with information to step forward. WBTV included a description of the person of interest holding a fuel can, derived from the homeowner's camera footage. This visual evidence has become a key component in the ongoing investigation.
Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the sheriff’s office, described the incident, highlighting the resident’s quick action that prevented the fire from escalating. Salisbury Post quoted McDaniel stating, "A fire then began which the resident was able to put out."
Contact information has been disseminated for those with any tips to make contact with Detective D. Fero at 704-216-8702 or to anonymously submit information through Rowan County Crime Stoppers at 866-639-5245.
