Accused North Providence Poisoner Placed Under Arrest: Reports

NORTH PROVIDENCE, RI — A town employee on paid leave amid allegations he filled a co-workers Gatorade with windshield wiper fluid has been charged with poisoning, multiple media outlets reported."North Providence police say they arrested Alessio D’Andrea, 29, Monday and charged him with felony poisoning," WJAR reported, noting that investigators say "co-workers told the victim he just drank wiper fluid and that it was supposed to be a prank.North Providence Mayor Charles Lombardi previously expressed to WPRI that he also believed there was no malicious intent behind the supposed poisoning, describing the matter as "childish."Lombardi failed to respond Tuesday to a request for comment on D'Andrea's case.On Monday, WPRI reported that the co-worker "immediately realized" his Gatorade bottle did not in fact contain Gatorade."The victim drove himself to the hospital afterward, where police said he spent nearly two days under observation," WPRI said.Windshield wiper fluid contains methanol, which is "highly toxic," according to Poison Control."Drinking windshield washer fluid often causes stomach upset and vomiting at first," Poison Control said on its website. "The most serious symptoms of methanol poisoning don't happen for a while. Someone could swallow a fatal amount and feel fine for a few hours. Later, the person who swallowed it might appear dizzy, sleepy, confused, or even drunk. Meanwhile, their body is metabolizing methanol into formaldehyde and formic acid, which are responsible for the delayed but severe results of methanol poisoning.""The most important delayed effects of windshield washer fluid poisoning are making the blood more acidic, brain damage, and impaired vision. Eye symptoms range from blurred vision to complete blindness," according to Poison Control. "Without prompt treatment in an emergency room, a person with methanol poisoning could suffer permanent blindness or even coma and death."The Valley Breeze reported that it was "alleged that D’Andrea filled an empty Gatorade bottle with windshield washer fluid while two other employees watched him do so.""The arrest of D’Andrea, who is currently on unpaid administrative leave, was the result of an investigation conducted by the North Providence Police Detective Division from an incident that occurred during the last week of June, states a release," the Valley Breeze story said.North Providence Police Chief Alfredo Ruggiero Jr. failed to respond to a request for further information on D'Andrea's case. The article Accused North Providence Poisoner Placed Under Arrest: Reports appeared first on North Providence, RI Patch.
