Here’s Why Dan Harmon Says That ‘I’ve Become My Own Chevy Chase’

As we may have mentioned once or twice in the past, working on Community wasn’t always the easiest job, thanks in large part to Caddyshack star/toilet fortune heir Chevy Chase. The former Saturday Night Live cast member famously antagonized his co-stars, lobbing racist insults at Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover — sometimes involving the N-word — and straight-up physically fighting Joel McHale. Meaning that the only way Chase’s going to be in the Community movie is if a fan edits him in using clips from old National Lampoon movies. Also contentious was the relationship between Chase and creator Dan Harmon, who isn't exactly known for being the chillest personality to deal with either. Famously, Harmon “publicly reprimanded Chase in front of his family and colleagues” during a wrap party, allowing frustrated crew members to collectively, cathartically shout, “Fuck you, Chevy!” This prompted Chase to leave Harmon an expletive-filled voicemail, which leaked online. Although Chase and Harmon soon became “friends again,” Chase was eventually fired from Community for his bad behavior. Now, more than 10 years since Chase’s character was killed off in a masturbatory tragedy, it’s a little surprising to find out that Harmon just compared himself to Chase, albeit jokingly. In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Harmon admitted that he’s less on top of Rick and Morty’s production timeline than he used to be. “I’m really bad at keeping track these days because we’re so on schedule that we’re ahead of schedule,” the producer explained. “I was told last night that at Comic-Con, we will be doing a table read of the two Beths episode (“The Curicksous Case of Bethjamin Button," which dropped on June 29th). My response was very sincerely, ‘Maybe I should punch that script up.’ And (executive producer) Steve Levy said, ‘It already aired on television.’”“I’ve become my own Chevy Chase now,” Harmon added, referring to the star’s history of being checked out during production (and hopefully nothing else).Harmon, who became famous for his “exhausting” last-minute rewrites on Community, calls the new Rick and Morty schedule “very alien,” confessing that “I sometimes wake up in a cold sweat going, ‘How do I destroy everything? How do I slow it down?’ The answer is, I can’t.”He also noted that the show, which is “currently recording voice work for Season Nine,” will clearly never be able to comment on current events. “That means that you’re not going to get that amazing Epstein episode,” Harmon joked. “We’re not going to have hot-topic stuff. We stay timeless.”That being said, it’s hard to imagine that future generations will understand the nuances of the recent James Gunn-Zack Snyder scene — or even who James Gunn and Zack Snyder are, for that matter.
