Way back in 2013, Patton Oswalt was on an episode of Parks And Recreation where his character delivered a many-minute long filibuster at a town hall meeting as to what he’d like to see in a potential sequel to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. The moment has become a comedic classic that, according to Oswalt, it inspired the opening scene in The Book of Boba Fett.
The moment in question depicts Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) emerging from the Sarlacc pit following the events of Return of the Jedi. Oswalt on Parks and Rec describes the bounty hunter’s ascent thusly:
“Pan down from the twin suns of Tatooine. We are now close on the mouth of the Sarlacc pit. After a beat, the gloved Mandalorian armor gauntlet of Boba Fett grabs onto the sand outside the Sarlacc pit, and the feared bounty hunter pulls himself from the maw of the sand beast.”
On a May 22, 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Oswalt said that Book of Boba Fett creator Jon Favreau confirmed to him that they filmed the sequence of Morrison coming out of the sand to time precisely with Oswalt’s speech.
You can see the comparison of Oswalt’s description and the scene in question in the video below. They match up pretty well! [end-mark]
