Arvada Winterfest sees record attendance after move to Olde Town
Over 3,000 people poured into Olde Town Arvada for this year’s Winterfest multi-cultural celebration — 1,000 more than the typical average attendance of the event.This year’s festivities took place Feb. 22 and saw the event move from its traditional location in McIlvoy Park to the Olde Town Square and surrounding streets, including Grandview Avenue and Olde Wadsworth Boulevard. The dual stages (one in the Square and one on Grandview) mirrored popular Olde Town Arvada Business Improvement District events like Second Saturdays. Performances from McTeggart Irish Dancers, Mariachi Sangre Mexicana, Kalama Polynesian Dancers and a dragon and lion dance by the Colorado Asian Cultural Heritage Center highlighted the stages, while the Olde Town Library hosted an adult story time by the Red Feather Woman and an art demonstration by Cathy Frick.Arvada’s Special Events Coordinator, Adelle Burton, credited the change in location and the good weather for the uptick in attendance.“I’d say the beautiful weather for sure (brought people in),” Burton said. “And also, I think the move to kind of the best street area in Olde Town has been a huge factor for the increase of attendance.”Burton added that the local businesses in Olde Town benefited from the extra people coming down.“I know (the business owners) were really excited to hear about Winterfest moving over to this spot,” Burton said. “So, I would love to hear just great feedback from them after the event, and hopefully an increase in sales as well. And then maybe some extra recognition from people who don’t come to Arvada all the time and are enjoying Olde Town for the first time.”Winterfest is typically viewed as the “kickoff” to festival season by the Arvada Festivals Commission, who also host the Kite Festival, Movies Around Town and the city’s Independence Day celebration.
