School bus stop changes go into effect in Cranston
CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Some students in Cranston will return to the classroom on Thursday and can expect changes at some of their bus stops.
The city has about 11,000 students in the district, with 25 public schools.
Superintendent Jeannine Nota-Masse told 12 News Cranston has made progress in learning loss since the COVID-19 pandemic and said establishing a routine is imperative as the new school year begins.

"Getting back to our routines and the expectation for kids to be in school every day is important, and it starts in elementary school," she said. "The habits that students learn in elementary school, good attendance, coming to school every day, and staying for the whole day, is important for when they're in high school because that's when their college opportunities are really starting to take shape."
About 5,000 kids in the district will take the bus to and from school. Nota-Masse explained some of the changes for bus stops this year for middle and high schoolers.
"We surveyed how many students were actually riding the busses from high school and middle school and then made adjustments to our bus stops so that the pick-up and drop-off were more efficient," Nota-Masse said. "Instead of us going down a cul de sac, which is difficult for a large bus we're picking up at the top of a cul de sac."

The district is also cracking down on the use of cell phones in the classroom this year. At the Apprenticeship Exploration School, they are piloting a program where students put their phones in pouches for the day.
"They keep it with them, but it takes away the distraction during the school day. It also encourages students to really communicate with each other more and engage with the teachers more," said Nota-Masse. "We're trying to really teach kids that human interaction is a really important part of their day. But cell phones are critical to them and they find it to be very hard to put away or give up."
