One Piece: Haki or Black Blade? How Was Shiryu Able to Stab Garp, One of the Strongest Haki Users on Hachinosu?

The impending battle between the Hero of the Navy and the Blackbeard Pirates has finally begun in One Piece anime and fans cannot get enough of it. The fight has been deemed one of the greatest fights in the history of One Piece with Monkey D. Garp proving why he is one of the most powerful characters in the series.

However, he chose to sacrifice himself for the future of the Marines. During the battle, Garp is cunningly stabbed by Shiryu, one of the Ten Titanic Captains of the Blackbeard Pirates. However, while he moves on to stab Garp, his sword, Raiu, is coated with haki, which has confused fans.
Thus, the debate has been started about whether Shiryu has managed to turn his sword into a black blade or he was simply using Armament Haki to land a powerful blow and take down Garp. While fans argue about Shiryu’s sword, the answer to this question has already been given in the One Piece anime episode.
The Enticing Battle Between Monkey D. Garp and Blackbeard Pirates
One Piece Episode 1121 starts with a glimpse of the past where Garp and Aokiji are seen training together. Commodore Brannew explains how they would train by punching the ships without the use of Haki or Devil Fruit powers. As the story moves forward, the scene shifts to Hachinosu Island, where Garp is wreaking havoc on the pirates and Blackbeard’s crew.

He took down Sanjuan Wolf with one punch and then went on to face Vasco Shot and Aokiji. As he is demolishing the entire island, he sees a black sword flying towards Koby at full speed. Garp pushes Koby away and himself gets stabbed by the sword. He then finds out that the sword belonged to Shiryu, who was using his Devil Fruit, Suke Suke no Mi, to launch a sneak attack.

While he succeeded, it did not affect Garp’s strength much as he then engaged in a one-on-one battle with his former apprentice. As Garp and Aokiji exchanged blows, the flashbacks from their past explained their former relationship. However, their last punch landed each other far away. It was truly one of the greatest fights in One Piece.
The Biggest Question About Garp’s Fight Against The Blackbeard Pirates
Many believe that if Shiryu had not stabbed Garp, he would have raised hell on Hachinosu Island and easily escaped along with his apprentices. However, the confusion comes from the fact that when Shiryu launched a sneak attack on Garp, his blade was covered in a black aura that is mostly seen on black blades like Mihawk’s Yoru and on Haki blades like Zoro’s swords.

This led to the debate about whether Shiryu has turned his sword into a black blade or is simply using Armament Haki. If Shiryu had turned his sword into a black blade, he would have probably taken over Zoro as one of the strongest swordsmen in the One Piece world. But Eiichiro Oda gave the answer to this debate in the episode just after he stabbed Garp.

As Garp gets stabbed, he learns that Shiryu used his Devil Fruit powers. He grabs him by the throat and throws him on the ground with full force. As soon as Shiryu removes his hand from his sword, it turns into a normal blade. This proves that Shiryu was just using Armament Haki, and he also has a long way to go before activating the next Black Blade of One Piece.
