Arizona Proud: Three Elite Students from Scottsdale and Mesa Named 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars
Arizona's educational standouts have shone through as three high school seniors hit the academic jackpot, being named the 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholars. Tom Horne, the state's chief of schools, just couldn't wait to sing their praises. In an announcement, Horne heralded Sruti Peddi of Fountain Hills from BASIS Charter in Scottsdale, Matteo N. Huish of BASIS Charter in Mesa, and Vivian M. Saavedra from Scottsdale's Chaparral High School as the crème de la crème of Arizona's public schools.
As covered on AZEd.gov, Horne said, “These three students represent the best of what Arizona’s public schools offer. They have committed themselves to the pursuit for academic excellence, and their hard work has paid off by attaining the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholarship.” Recognition as a Presidential Scholar is a nod to their strong achievements in academics, the arts, and career and technical education fields, marking them as among the nation's elite high school seniors.
During Teacher Appreciation Week, Horne took the opportunity to give a shout-out to the educators behind the scenes, saying, “This is Teacher Appreciation Week, and the accomplishments of these students remind us of the value of great teachers.” His statement underscores the impact that teaching professionals have on students striving for scholastic excellence.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, which has been honoring high-flying students since 1964, was initially created to celebrate scholastic achievement. Expanded in 1979 and again in 2015, it now includes accolades for accomplishments in the arts and career and technical education. Over 8,000 students have basked in its glory to date, according to AZEd.gov.
