Ohio News Reporter Hospitalized After Shooting, Suspect Found Dead
A reporter for Cleveland station WOIO is recovering from surgery after a man shot her before turning a gun on himself in an apparent domestic incident, police said

An Ohio man is dead and a local news reporter has been hospitalized after she was injured in a shooting, police said.Winnie Dortch, a reporter for WOIO 19 News, is recovering from surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center after she was shot during an incident that occurred in the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood, Ohio early Monday morning.According to Lakewood police, officers received a call reporting that two people were arguing at around 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 7. While officers were arriving on the scene, 911 callers told Lakewood dispatchers they heard gunshots go off.Dortch was found to have at least one gunshot "serious" wound, police said, and a man who was later identified as 34-year-old Bryant Carter was found dead at the scene. Lakewood Police Captain Gary Stone told local NBC affiliate station WKYC Studios as well as ABC affiliate News 5 Cleveland that they believe Carter killed himself after shooting Dortch.Police told WOIO, WKYC and News 5 that Dortch and Carter were familiar with each other. WKYC reported that a priest from nearby St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church confirmed that they were both members of the Clifton Early Learning Center community, which closed for the day following the shooting."It's a tragedy," Father Kevin Elbert told the outlet of the shooting. "This is so close to home. This is a tragic event. Any loss of life is a tragic event, especially in a place that's holy ground."

"Our prayers are with her, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community."Dortch previously worked in Milwaukee for local station CBS 58, the outlet said. Last month, Dortch announced on social media that she would be moving from WOIO to WGN-TV in Chicago, her hometown, in December 2024.
"For years, I’ve been trying to make it back home to the best city in the Midwest!" she wrote in a Sept. 18 Instagram post. "God has a way of bringing things FULL CIRCLE! My childhood dream has come true. As of December 2024, I will be a full-time reporter at WGN-TV. To my family, friends, co-workers, strangers and associates, thank you for the encouragement.
