Steve Smith retires from ODI
Australian batter Steve Smith has officially announced his retirement from one-day international (ODI) cricket following Australia’s loss to India in the 2025 Champions Trophy semifinals. He was Australia’s vice-captain in the format and has been a key figure in the team’s ODI success. Smith played 170 matches, accumulating 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries.
He has played an important role in Australia’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023. Smith also served as ODI captain for 64 matches. Reflecting on his decision, Smith stated, “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it. There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.” (via Forbes)
He emphasized that stepping away would allow Australia to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup.
Despite retiring from ODIs, Smith will continue playing Test and T20 cricket. He highlighted his commitment to the upcoming World Test Championship final, as well as the series against the West Indies and England. Smith’s decision to remain in T20s has also led to speculation about his potential involvement in the 2028 Olympics, where cricket is set to return.
Cricket Australia has expressed full support for Smith’s decision, with National Selection Panel chair George Bailey praising his contributions. Bailey said, “His record as a batter across 170 games is exemplary and to leave the format as a two-time World Cup winner cements his legacy as one of the great Australian ODI players.”
