“I wish I had done that when I die, I’ll say..”: Awful Criticism For Megalopolis Will Not Make Francis Ford Coppola Regret Risking $120 Million on His Dream Project
Megalopolis created an astonishing buzz as the movie went on to be the most ambitious project of Francis Ford Coppola in recent times. When many major studios backed off from the movie, the director who developed the script for decades, self-financed the project.

Megalopolis’ reviews following the Cannes premiere of the Francis Ford Coppola dream project were not what the director had expected. The movie mostly met with mixed reviews and the Adam Driver, Nathalie Emmanuel, Shia LaBeouf and Grace VanderWaal-starrer movie sustained a 53% Rotten Tomatoes score. That is quite low considering the legacy of Coppola.

Still, the director who self-financed the movie with a whopping $120 million is far from having any regrets fulfilling his longtime dream. “I don’t care. I never cared,” Coppola said at the Cannes Press Conference (via Vanity Fair).
“I put the risk in the movie. I have no problems with the financials. My children, without exceptions, have wonderful careers without a fortune. They don’t need a fortune. It’s how I felt the film should be, and I was paying for it…. There are so many people who, when they die, say ‘I wish I had done that.’ When I die, I’ll say, ‘I got to do that.’”
The 85-year-old’s children followed their father’s footsteps joining the movie business. Sofia Coppola has been one of the highly regarded filmmakers of the generations and Roman and Gian-Carlo Coppola have created their names in Hollywood as well. So, Coppola doesn’t have to worry about saving for his children.

Of course, the director and the cast of the movie were overjoyed by the reception of the movie by the attendees. The veteran Hollywood director said that the experience of the whole premiere ordeal and reception was surreal to him. “It’s a little surreal,” Coppola said (via Deadline).
“Finding yourself in that situation and also understanding that, OK, after whatever it was, this is the moment of truth where I’m going to find out if this all jelled or didn’t jell. So you can imagine, it was a little dream-like. Of course I hope that it would go well. And from my standpoint, it went very well, so I was very appreciative.”
The reaction from the audience after the release of the trailer of the movie was positive on social platforms as they hailed the director’s bold move. The legendary director first conceived the idea of the grand movie in the 1970s and development began in 1983 (per USA Today).
Megalopolis is slated for 16 May 2024 release.
