If you’re anything like me, I’m sure you’re creatures of habit. Once you find that one product you love, there’s no going back—it becomes a pantry or fridge staple. Mine are Dr Pepper, Dot's Pretzels, and easy breakfast items that I can assemble quickly. Those include using a product I reach for again and again: hash brown patties, specifically the ones from Trader Joe’s. While they’re a staple in my quick breakfast regimes, they’re also easy to eat as a snack or incorporate into lunches and dinners. But upon picking up my latest restock of hash brown patties from Trader Joe’s, I noticed something strange. After assembling my breakfast sandwich of a bagel, hash brown patty, and avocado with everything bagel seasoning, one bite made me pause. It tasted… different. Maybe I had put too much seasoning? Or maybe my avocados were way too ripe? I took a bite out of each item to find the culprit and discovered that it was, in fact, my beloved hash brown patty that tasted off. It tasted almost burnt, even though it was perfectly crisped. And it seems like I’m not the only one who has noticed this curious change.Has Trader Joe's Changed Its Hash Brown Patties?Once I figured out my hash brown patty tasted off, I quickly ran to the internet to investigate and stumbled upon a Reddit thread of others noticing the same change in flavor.“Do the [Trader Joe’s] hash browns suddenly taste awful to anyone?” the title read. “I used to have the hash brown from Trader Joe's all the time and never had a problem with the taste. But starting from around two weeks ago or so, it started to taste awfully stale and bland. Did anyone notice this or am I going crazy?”Users quickly chimed in that indeed, the taste has been off.“Yes, they are so soggy now. I thought it was just me! They used to taste just like McDonald’s and now I can’t even get them to be crispy!” one user wrote. “Ok, that is weirding me out,” another replied. “I just had some today and assumed they had freezer burn because they weren't great.” Others have written that they’ve had hit-and-miss packages when they recently purchased the hash browns. Some taste good, while others taste absolutely awful, with some commenters claiming the flavor is “like they were fried in very old oil.” But some commenters have offered some advice to help combat this and avoid getting a bad batch of patties.“I noticed that once that plastic liner is popped, they get stale the longer they stay in the freezer. Maybe they thawed or the liner popped during their delivery to the store,” they wrote. So, when going to reach for your next round of hash brown patties, inspect the packaging to ensure there are no holes or small rips so you don’t get a bad batch of patties.
