Over 1 Million Ineligible Voters Removed in Texas, Gov. Abbott Touts Election Integrity Efforts
In a move championed by Governor Greg Abbott as foundational to upholding election integrity, over one million names have been struck from Texas' voter registration lists. These efforts, which began following the passing of Senate Bill 1 in 2021, have largely focused on removing noncitizens, deceased individuals, and those no longer residing in the state.
Among those purged from the voter rolls were over 6,500 noncitizens and more than 6,000 voters with felony convictions, according to a statement released by the Governor's office. In his announcement, Governor Abbott stated, "Election integrity is essential to our democracy," highlighting the importance he places on the crackdown of ineligible voters in the Texas rolls.
The Texas Secretary of State's office has been instrumental in combing through the voter lists, sending out approximately 1,930 records to the Attorney General's Office for potential illegal voting after identifying those noncitizens with a voting history. This move comes as part of a broader initiative to tighten voting regulations, including increased penalties for illegal voting activities.
Abbott's track record on voting legislation extends beyond Senate Bill 1, with measures like Senate Bill 1113 allowing the state to withhold funds from counties failing to remove noncitizens from voter rolls and House Bill 574 elevating the consequences of counting invalid votes to a second-degree felony. Together these bills represent a significant restructuring of the election law landscape in Texas, serving to implement what the Governor asserts is one of the strongest election laws in the nation, as per the Governor's office.
