Gerald Chatman has Florida in official visit conversation for 4-star DL Josiah Sharma
Although he is a top-100 prospect with On3, defensive lineman Josiah Sharma is continuing to collect scholarship offers.
Those now on board with the 4-star prospect include LSU, Auburn, Michigan, and most recently the Florida Gators. That newest SEC opportunity was presented to him on May 15.
All in all, nearly 20 programs have offered the Sacramento (Cali.) Folsom star.
“Me personally, I always wanted to play in the SEC. Any school that comes late from the SEC, I’m always going to treat it like they’ve been there for the long run. That’s just me personally. I’m honestly going to give them a chance,” Sharma said of Florida when speaking to Gators Online.
“The d-tackle who is 458 pounds (Desmond Watson), that’s the first thing that comes to mind. I don’t know too much about Florida, but that’s the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Florida.”
Visit conversations are underway
Have both parties agreed on a date for Sharma to make his way out to Gainesville?
“We were trying to set one up. I think it’s just lack of communication on my part, but we are trying to set one up for sure,” said Sharma. “It would definitely be an OV. They are coming in kind of late, so the effort to get out there would be really crazy.”
If On3’s 83rd-ranked prospect was to visit, it would be in the near future. That would give Florida enough time to become a realistic contender when it matters the most.
“It would definitely be in the summer because I’m for sure making my decision in July,” said Sharma. “I’m getting a little tired of recruiting (laughter).”
Connecting with Florida is seamless for Josiah Sharma
Tasked with selling Sharma on life with the Florida Gators is defensive line coach Gerald Chatman. That is who offered 2025 prospect roughly two weeks ago.
“He’s a really sociable person,” Sharma said of Chatman. “I feel like we have a really good relationship – me personally. When you get these coaches who are very sociable, you always find it easy to vibe with them. I haven’t known him long enough to say he’s a genuine person though if that makes sense.”
Two official visits are on the calendar
Right now, Sharma has official visits booked with Texas (June 7-9) and Alabama (June 21-23). That means the Gators have the weekends of May 31-June 2 and June 14-16 to secure an official visit. The defensive lineman could squeeze in a mid-week trip as well.
For now though, other programs have the clear advantage heading into official visit season.
“I would love to say Alabama stands out a lot for me; Texas stands out a lot for me; Oregon stands out a lot for me,” Sharma said. “That’s just a little list that stands out to me. It’s not a top three or anything like that.”
According to the On300 rankings, the 6-foot-3.5, 320-pound rising senior is the No. 7 defensive lineman.
Stay tuned to Gators Online.
